Re: TuffTorq K46 / John Deere L110 Transmission Repair Guide with Pictures

To all those K46's out there I found on surpluscenter.com site $269 + ship. K57R the center case alone for the k46 is $300. I compared my K46A to the K57R (all part #'s listed below) the pump, motor, shaft, charge pump are all the same #'s the center case on K46 upgrade (I've read here) is 1A646099530 or (540) TT shows Not Available but found on other sites. Since my JD 180LTR the trans is behind axles, I need to rotate the motor wedge to reverse the for/ rev. also need to swap axles as K57R are 3/4" but shorter. you can modify most JD's w/ shorter axles but wheels rub and need to do some minor cutting and deck may hit when lifting or cutting grass high.
the K57R center case # is 1A64609953, and includes the charge pump! The pulley is about 1" forward and to the right slightly. So worse case may need longer belt. Mine didn't maybe because it was a little worn?? Since I dont know what oil is in will be drainning any way to use the 20-50 synthetic. axle swap is easy, the only item I want to replace is the gears with the heat tempered steel (powder steel gears are S***T) could not find part #'s for gears yet.
Charge pump #'s are different but may be because TT sells as kit?
here are the #'s buying individual TT parts (from person doing k57 upgrade) and comparable parts K57R serial #7A646084020. (sold on Surplus)

Re: TuffTorq K46 / John Deere L110 Transmission Repair Guide with Pictures

I've got a K46AC. I wouldn't mind getting the K57R for that terrific price of $270 and just taking parts out of it to rebuild my K46AC. The Pump and Motor kit P/Ns match but the Center Case does not.
Also, my K46AC doesn't have a charge kit, so I'm not sure if those parts could just be added (the case probably has to different to house them for one). I don't want to dick with modifying my tractor to fit the K57R in it. Darn shame parts aren't compatible, $270 is a good price.

For anyone having done a K46 to K57 upgrade - does the addition of the charge pump require a different lower housing or can the original housing be used?

Re: TuffTorq K46 / John Deere L110 Transmission Repair Guide with Pictures

No mods necessary if you have short axel bolts right in even the rear mount (5th bolt) holds the back of trans! Only reason I need to remove cover is I have longer axles, If yours has the short axle it's a straight swap. May have to get a belt about 3/4 - 1" longer? there is a site that shows how to modify a deere with longer axle to except the shorter ones. With plenty of pics, only issue was raising deck to upper scale would rub. see John Deere Transaxle Replacement/Upgrade | MacRumors Forums
I cannot verify if center case (K57R to a K46) can be swapped, as part #'s would be different, the k57 has the charge pump where the K46 does not. but because the pulley is slightly off (on K57R) compared to the K46 I imaging the center case may not be swap-able.
Before I bought the K57 I was going to use parts above they all fit the K46 housing, outer cases are same. center case with the charge pump above fits the k46 centercase. but would cost $$$$. Tuff torq had a guy who worked there that used to rebuild the K46 with a charge pump but he retired and no one else is doing it.

see John Deere Transaxle Replacement/Upgrade | MacRumors Forums, plenty of pics with the fan slightly off from the k46 case may be different, can be verified by looking up Tuff Torq #'s off K57R and look up your K46 part # to confirm. But really no reason to swap cases though? The K57R bolts right in, it also has a drain plug for easier service. Although pending the installation of wedge (controls direction) that may need to be swapped.
What I did (being not sure on wedge position) I know my trans spinned clockwise to forward control, I slid a 1/2" hose on end of shaft (removed fan and pulley) attached a 1/2" stud with hose clamps and spun with a drill to determine proper rotation.

I know the axle P/Ns (1A646089450 and 1A646089460) on my K46AC from the Tuff Torq drawing, but the K57R drawing conveniently does not list them for some odd reason. So I have no idea if I have the short or long axles. What version of K46 did you have - I could tell if I have the long axles if my P/Ns match yours. It might be true that the K57R will bolt right on, but there are other things that might not match so well such as the operating levers (control, brake, bypass). Did your linkages match to them with no trouble? Of course, my mower is an L120 so mine may be different than yours as well. Also, I wouldn't be so worried about the pulley distance being off a little bit - that could be compensated by belt length, but what about the pulley elevation - that has to be real close or the belt won't last long. These are the reasons that I wanted to take parts from the K57R and put them into my K46AC - I would then know everything on the exterior would mate exactly. I don't really want to bend and cut things to force it to fit like the other gentlemen did that you referenced - I don't want a FrankenDeere! There is no way to compare the P/Ns of the lower case because Tuff Torq's drawings don't call them out - both halves are sold as a kit. The kit numbers aren't the same, so that would lead me to believe that the housings are different. I was hoping that the charge pump didn't take up any additional space because it was totally enclosed inside the filter, but I can't really tell for certain by the drawing.

I have a K46A serial #AM130747 I can get serial # if I get home before dark.
I was surprised to confirm what you say part #68 & 69 on tuff torqs site, do not show part #'s??

All levers are the same I disconnected the reverse kill switch,
I had to flip the forward reverse lever a bit of a pain (need to punch out drift pins), do not know if you need to do the same?
If your trans moves at all put trans on bench and check rotation (as I did with drill) after flipping the lever if necessary, spin trans for rotation.
If backwards then need to drain and flip wedge. take a pic of wedge as it sits knowing direction of forward, since it took me weeks to get missing parts (I did not take it apart, got it back in a basket), and every pic I found show (even tuff torq's pics) wedge thin side up, after replacing trans, it was backwards. If it was not for LTR deck, center chute, rear brackets for grass catcher after a few times, takes less than an hour to R & R the trans, I also found on mine the arm for F/ R are real tight no room between frame and lever, and hard to get on. So I attach arms before bolting trans in-place. when bolting up may need to finagle with the brake foot lever though.

So you flipped the F/R lever and then also flipped the wedge? If that's the case, wouldn't the end result (and therefore the correct rotation) be the same as not flipping the F/R lever and not flipping the wedge? I must be missing something - unless you had to flip the F/R lever to be able to mate the pedal linkage.
