Turbo and trailering

We have a fan driven exhaust system for running diesel engines in our facility. The 5" exhaust inlet hose measures 7000fpm or 79.5mph (not adjustable so ya git watcha git) This connected to a 9 liter detroit exhaust stack reads about 150rpm on the turbo with a strobe. The intake pipe is not connected so any air filter restriction is not present.
So I guess the turbo does spin but probably not fast enough to damage a turbo on short distance trips. I would definitely tape the pipe if they are predicting rain or in dusty or dirty locations.

While researching California regs on properly chaining a tractor on a trailer, this was brought up. The loader/bucket on a tractor has to be secured. There have been instances of folks trailering tractors with them running. The loader joystick gets jostled while in transport, and up comes the loader. Said loader then hits power lines, bridge, overpass ect. So it was explained to me by CHP Commercial Enforcement.

I have now heard some very good arguments for and against the possibility of this happening, both here and on the Turbo Diesel Register websites. I think it would be safe to say that this would be possible if the conditions are right and motor timing is right. So when I put that big Holset on my BX, I think I'll tape it up when trailering, better safe than sorry. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Unless the head is off and turbo and exh. manifold still hooked up, it wont do it. Wheres the air gonna go after it crosses over the turbo? The valves wont open enough to allow enough air to flow across it and spin and if it did where would it go? the intake and exhaust would have to be open together. And if thats happening then you got problems. We tape exhaust pipes on trucks with engines dissasembled and turbos still on that are going to be towed but usually they have had the turbos removed already. Tow away with out taping the exh, its not going to hurt anything.
