Turbo Charger Upgrade for Older Kubota

The compressors pressure map is certified for sea level at ambient temp and barometic air pressure by the OEM manufacturer.

Typically, OEMs derate their turbocharger compressors @ altitudes > 5,000 feet due to the major decrease in air pressure, this will constrict both the choke and the surge regions of the compressor map significantly, which, if not accounted for, will allow for gross overspeed, gross overheating, and supersonic air waves inside the compressor leading to its self destruction (aluminum compressor wheels also cannot handle heat much greater than around 325*F, titanium wheels are made especially for high altitude high temp operations).

Be SURE to tell the turbo folks that you plan on operating at 10,000 foot elevations so that they can take this extreme altitude into consideration when they recommend the A/R ratio of the air compressor housing and the compressor wheel for your turbo application to keep it within their specified limits of operability.

What works at sea level does not work at two miles high! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Rocketman,
It also isn't a bad idea to use an intercooler to cool the turbo compressed air prior to it entering the combustion chamber, as the boost effects will be maximized, as density is inversly proportional to temperature. This cooling also helps to decrease NOX emissions and increases efficiency.
