turbo diesel tractor or not???

We have a lot of 2 and 3 tractor farms that put 1200 -1500 hours per unit a year. We have one farmer-rancher that between him and his son put over 1900 hours on their TV140 NH in 13 months.

JP-4 was the Air Force's main fuel, the navy used JP-5. JP-5 has a much higher flash point than JP-4 so it's safer to use on carriers.
This is correct.
Back in the day I happened to find myself wrenching on Detroit Diesel 675's that just so happened to be powering what we commonly refered to as "tugs" on the flight deck of the USS FDR and these normally asperated slant 6 diesels ran surprisingly well on JP-5 only. With space at a minimum it just wasn't cost effective for a carrier to carry several types of fuel so everything had to be able to run on JP-5. These tugs also carried the GTC105's which were also my responsibility to maintain. These GTC-105's were basically small jet engines that provided extremely high pressure output air and drove AC/DC generators for starting and servicing of the aircraft onboard. They shared the same fuel tank as the Detroit diesel on the tugs. All worked fine considering they could avg 12hrs a day run time..
Over the course of the yr I had this maintenance pleasure we didn't have any major mechanical failures of the 675's but the GTC's were another story.

What has this got to do with the original question? I dunno, just keep'n it alive I rekon :D :D
Carry on

sure you don't mean 6-71's??

sure you don't mean 6-71's??

Why yes I did :D
The "back in the day" was the mid 70's and when I posted it I said to myself, "self, that just don't look right" but I got in hurry and I left it as is, good catch.....

Perhaps I'll share the story on how the 6-71 I had just changed one of the injectors out of got stuck wide open due to it getting jammed on the rack and was sucking the oil right out of the open valve cover area and continued to run on oil (the fuel shutoff was turned off btw) until I stuffed enough rags into the intake to suffocate it! That engine ran WOT for 5 minutes before we got it shutdown and and went on to work fine afterwards, with another new injector btw :D ....
Got 30 days of mess duty out of that learning experience :D :D

The pic shows some of my tugs and one of VMA-231's AV8A's doing a vertical landing on the bow. A 1st for a fixed wing aircraft btw :D
I was TAD from VMA-231 to AIMD...

Hey, Volfant....
Nice Harrier photo.
What is the surface material of the carrier deck? I am sure it
gets punished by that vertical jet blast!

I don't recall the plate thickness but since some of the aircraft weighed in excess of 60,000lbs when loaded it had to be stout. There could be around 40 on the flightdeck at any given time. Plus they literally slammed down on teh deck when recovering. The entire deck was coated with non-skid and it was at least 1/4" thick in the low spots. It would rub your skin off if you happened to slide across it.
There was also two expansion joints in the flight deck that basically separated the deck into 3 large pieces fore to aft. I remember seeing them spread wide enough for a mans entire foot to drop into when the ship encountered large swails and/or waves.

I don't recall working on any diesels that were equipped with turbo's. The 6-71's had superchargers ...

The Deere 4230's (100hp) I use to drive had a 404ci 6 cyl turbo diesel in them. My BIL's grandson has a TS100 (about 100hp) with a 273ci 4 cyl turbo diesel. I couldn't find the torque numbers but I would guess the Deere had a log more of it. The HP rpm ratings were about the same, 2200.

These days it's all about hp and a souped up 4 banger. That poor NH TS100 even sounds like a VW Rabbet. :([/QUOTE]

You cannot compare those two tractors , The Green thing is 100 pto hp, The ford is 100 at the flywheel ( 80 pto )

I had a J D 3140 ( 6 cylinder ) + ford 7710 ( 4 cylinder ) The ford had more power.
Same with my MF's little 698Turbo was better than 6 cyl 3080 .
So i really don't think there is much difference when you compare tractors of the same size.
Take my cat d7 , 180hp , 831ci and weighs 25 tons , Running at 1200 rpm , NOTHING has more torque than that 4 CYLINDER.

Ok, here is another comparison. I have a 1988 F250 with a 7.3 diesel. Non turbo, factory rated at 180 hp & 340 lbs torque.:( After 100,000 mile warranty was up I had a Banks Sidewinder Turbo & exhaust installed. WOW, what a difference. Banks ratings of 274 hp & 501 lbs torque. The difference was unimaginable,:) I was very upset that I had waited so long to get all this new power out of the same engine. Well it ran great for another 74,000 miles before it burned a hole in one of the pistons.(keep pyro under 1100 degrees per Banks) After a couple of "factory" rebuilt engines 15k & 34k, I found a 1992 7.3 with 82,000 miles on it and rebuilt it myself. In the process of a lot of research to get this thing rebuilt right, my neighbor offers me his innercooler off of his 02-F350. ( put a complete Banks set-up on his F350) Well after a lot of creative engineering, got the innercooler installed with it looking like it was done at the factory.;) Now the truck runs as good or better than my 01, F350 that I use at work. My exhaust gases have never gotten over 900 degrees and that is with the fuel on the injector pump turned up all the way. I am not sure how much more power I got because of the innercooler, maybe 20%, but I do know that I do not have to worry about how hot my exhaust is anymore.:)

So, for me anyway, an innercooler should extend the life of my engine due to the cooler temps. Oh, and my fuel mileage had increased about 3/4 to 1 mpg with the turbo and another 1 and 1/2 to 2 mpg with the innercooler.

Just me experiences, yours may vary.

I have seen severial farm tractors with over 16,000 hours on their original engine.

I once had a MF 698Turbo from new =14600hours
Currently have Ford TW20 = 11000hours
My CAT is unknown but in the 15-20000 somewhere, with one cracked cylinder head.
My neighbour had JD 3650 = 14500hrs 'Rest of tractor was terrible and many external engine parts changed ( oil coolers, pumps, injectors) but motor made it.
ALL turbo'd engines , More power, More efficient , Run sweeter

Hmm. So... Turbo from the start, I assume. And what about adding turbo (and intercooler, as seen elsewhere in the thread)? Of course... Yeah. Well. For now, I don't need any more power. I'll let you know when I'm running short :) That should happen next spring, of course (when I'm working more on clearing out the trees that are in the middle of my fields).
