Update: the turbo is to big, it will not spool with no load. Tomorrow we will brush hog and see if it makes boost, I am expecting it will make only a couple PSI, but without load it starts to spool, while tilling we got up to 1 PSI for a moment. The tiller is small so it is not a big load.

We ordered a GT15 turbo that is a tad bit smaller but the A/R is much lower so it should spool right up. It is a cheap chinese turbo but we will take it apart and replace all the POS seals with viton V90 seals and regulate oil to it. I will update tomorrow with a vid and results of boosting while brush hogging.
We will install the small turbo in 2 weeks

Seeing what was up early on I thought this may happen turbos need to match volume of air, small eng turbos off something like the 3cyl ECO boost Fords may work and be low cost as they are making LOTS of them with great aftermarket support.

It's why my International 6.4 liter diesel has compound turbocharging. A big one and a little one.

A turbo off of the 3 cyl would be to small as it is 1 liter. The turbo we ordered is a Chinese clone a turbo they use on one of the ecoboost engines.

On Youtube some guy has one of these turbos on his jinma 254 and he makes up to 1.5 bar of boost! So I recon if it works for him it should work for us.

Even if the turbo does not last long it is cheap and will just have been a $180 experiment

We also have a 27 second video of brush-hogging with it while trying to get boost. This was when it was still overheating with just the electric fan:

In the video the outside temp is 97F (humidity 80%), the digital temp gauge showed 179F 3 minutes into mowing, at 5 minutes it spiked to 190F
We added back the mechanical fan (along with the electric one) and the temp stayed at 174-176F no matter what the load.

Very interesting project. I'll be following your success as I have a foton 254 and I also believe that 30-35 HP would be the perfect for my needs

If you just need a few more HP try cranking up your fuel a little. We did that and even without boost the engine does not lug in 2nd low with a 6ft brush hog.
On the back of the injector pump (see my pict) unscrew the large nut (it's just a cap) and underneath you will see a black set screw, loosen the jam nut and turn it out 1/8 turn.
That was enough that we got more power but did not blow black smoke without the turbo.

Especially since you have an EPA engine they probably set it very lean.

Remember if your engine runs away pull the fuel cutoff and the compression release

Thx for the input, I don't think mine has a decompress lever. It would be nice to have a generator dyno to see how much the HP difference is before and after
