Turbos and Yanmars

Well, normally thats the idle limit spring that controls hunting from the governor, normally you don't want to mess with that but I don't know what series engine you are screwing with.

talked with a guy today. He said you don't want to put to much p.s.i. to a diesel engine that isn't turbo already? something about oiling the bottom of the piston skirt? also said 5-8 p.s.i. is not worth the trouble.

Well its been several years now and the turbo is still working very well. Still boosts to about 5 psi and all is good.

As to not being worth trouble, I have to disagree. At my elevation 7500 ft or so the tractor smoked due to being rich and was down 20% on power. Now it does not smoke as bad and is up on power. So if you ask me, someone who went thru the trouble I say its worth it.

It sounds like using a turbo to bring intake pressure back up to sea-level values is very worthwhile.

I have dreamed of adding a turbo to my yanmar powered jd3005 since I bought it. Has the 3tnv82a engine, and does an adequate job... but I'm of the belief that any diesel engine can benefit from a turbo and still be reliable, if boost levels are kept reasonable. I've turbo'd a NA 6.2l chevy truck, woke that right up!

I don't expect 40hp out of my 27hp motor, but 32-34hp would be a reasonable expectation.

Here's another option for small engine turbos, this is an OEM turbo for the modern tier 4 common rail TATA 800cc 2 cylinder 4000 RPM diesel made in India. Probably a little big for a sub 800cc engine under 3000 RPM. Would be easier to fab for 2 cylinder units. NOT a twin scroll, just has the exhaust manifold cast with the turbine housing bolts diectly onto head in OEM application.

Ignore the gasoline engine recommended size.

I added a turbo to my 3 cylinder 90ci Ford 1720 tractor 3 or 4 years ago for a significant power gain and will say its the best thing I’ve ever done. It turned a good tractor into a great tractor!!
I have put several hundred hours on it with no problems.
I used a Garrett GT1752 waste gated turbo off a Saab. Bought the turbo at a swap meet for $35.
I have photos in the review section.
Definitely worth it.
