Tire Selection Turf or Industrial tires

A lot depends on tractor weight for tire choice; a large heavy(+4,000 lb.) tractor with R4's is a different animal than a sub-cut with R4's.On asphalt, cement, heavy lifting R4's;for everything else R1's.

I run my front R1's at 25psi, and the rears way down to 8 or 10psi. That makes a huge difference in both traction and comfort.

Air pressure is the most over looked issue for traction!
Low air pressure lets the tire flex more so it can expel the snow or mud that builds up.

R4 tires are a rugged and stiff tire that is great for heavy work in tough conditions. They ride stiff and have large rubber blocks that are not good on ice. Many people use a grooving tool to add sipes to help some.

R1 tires are diggers in soft soil. They will dig up a yard too.

Turfs have lots of tread edges like a snow/ice car tire. They are a softer tire that rides better. A full loader load will squish them down a bit so you just have to watch out for sharp objects more.

This is a common discussion, so you'll find a lot of feedback in the "Similar Threads" section down at the bottom of this page.

Holy cow, i'm always amazed at how unobservant i am! I always assume the stuff at the bottom was advertisement of some sort. :confused2:

You won't believe what I have gone through in tires, wheels, weights, seats, and seat suspension systems, in an attempt to get a soft ride on my 2400 and riding mowers. Buttttt it looks like I'm there finally. When I run out of something to do I might just sell the stuff that didn't work for me on ebay.

I've had both turf and industrial on basically the same chassis tractor: JD 4010 (which is like a 2019E would be if JD made it) and JD 2025R. I had LOTS of troubles (flats, tire going off rim) with the turfs, but they did do a bit better on snow and bit more when turning.

Nary a problem with industrials, even on the 2 yr lemony 1025R, but they slip sideways easier either on a side slope or when turning.

Had R1s on my Gravely but did not have it long with them before selling it. They'll dig into soft/muddy ground easier. Turfs and industrials tend to fill with mud and skate over the top.

If you're worried about front turfs going flat from loader use, consider getting them foam filled at a forklift tire shop. They can customize the hardness of the foam for the tire, and you will never have to worry about flats. The added weight on a scut is also beneficial if using a rear 3pt snowblower for added steering control.

There are things to look at that clear a lot of the questions up. Normally snow removal equipment means the tractor is not on deep snow which is where farmers use chains. The turf tire gives you the maximum amount of rubber to the surface so they will under most conditions give you the most traction. To have a paved driveway turfs will far exceed any other type tires traction. With other types at best we recommend a road type chain to keep the rubber on the surface. Don't worry about a little wheel spin! Enjoy!

When I ordered my tractor I wasn't sure if R1 or R4 was the way to go. My land is very rocky, rooty, and muddy. Was thinking about R1 for traction but with all tire hazards went with tougher R4. I've been in some not too deep but thick mud and tractor did fine though with FEL, hoe, rimguard and cab my total weight is around 7800. I'm not using my tractor like a full blown skidder so I think I made right decision.
