I have a Bx23 with ag tires front and rear. I remove the fel and bh to mow, but I'm finding that I am tearing up the lawn wherever I have to make sharp turns. It seems that it is the front tires that are doing the damage so I'm wondering if I should just change the fronts to turf tires and leave the rears as is? Anybody done this? Any disadvantage other than not as much traction with the fel?
Thanks,
Jim

The disadvantage will be that the tires will not be the same size, and when using 4WD can cause a problem with the lead-lag ratio between the front and rear tires. This can lead to damage of the drive train.

You would need to purchase the proper sized industrials for both the front and the back.

If you're using front wheel drive, turn it off and you should get less damage. I doubt you'll be able to completely eliminate it, but not using 4WD should help.

A lot of old farmers around here use plain old truck tires on the front.

That's fine for a two wheel drive tractor, but the ratio between front and back tires is set for certain tire sizes when using 4WD.

Here's a link to a good article explaining lead/lag.

If he replaced the Ags with turfs of the same circumference, would that not be okay?

As long as he could get them in the same circumference, yes, but from what I've seen they are not usually available in exact sizes. If it was really close, the lead or lag may not be a problem.

Of course, new wheels would be needed as well as the IND tires are going to be wider than the Ags.

If you have a 4wd tractor, you will run into the binding problem. Rarely can you find turfs that would match the diameter of the ags.

You can promise to keep it in 2wd when the turfs are on. That's your call - folks tend to forget tho, human nature. Over time, when in 4wd, you will greatly increase the wear on the $$$ drivetrain.

I tore up my front u-joint. I could only afford back tires, then front tires later. I had turfs, and wanted R4. So, I went through the goodyear and Firestone charts, and thought I had a good match. It was close, but not close enough.

I put in a new u-joint, and finally got the right size R4 up front; everything has been fine since.

Mine is a mid 80's Kubota B8200(granddaddy to the B2710) with FEL, as well as a scraper or rotary mower.

I DO I DO!!!

Only a 2wd though. the fronts will still leave something if you are moving fast, but I don't know how they compare to the 4 rib ags, these are all I have. Only about 10 minutes to change the rears with an inpact.

If they are a different size you will do zero damage if you keep it in 2wd. In 2wd the shafts freewheel. In 4wd you may have a problem.

<font color="red"> I've never found this to be a problem with my bx 23 with ag tires.I always mow with the FEL & BH attached as i've never had either of them off the tractor.
