Chains Turf with Chains or Bar for a BX2230

</font><font color="blue" class="small">( I will be doing lots of lawn work but I also have some wooded work to do in building some trails. I would prefer to stay with turf to save the lawn, and they are pretty good in the snow from what I hear. I'm going to have to roll the dice and use the chains when I need the extra traction that 4x4 cant provide with the turfs.

otherwise I buy the bars down the road.

If you are undecided, then I would go with the bar tires and if you decide that you want turfs, there are a lot of people here that bought both and only use the bars, so they would be willing to part with the turfs for the right price. Probably less than what the dealer will want for a set of four.... $270 - $300. This is another reason to put a generalized location into your profile. Who knows who might be living near you. I know of two people on TBN that didn't know each other and only live about 1/4 mile apart. It was only when they started corresponding since they both had a generalized location in there profiles, that they realized that they were neighbors.

Matt,

I don't know what part of the country you're in, but In SW Ohio, I use the turfs in 4WD and have had no trouble shoveling 16" plus of snow with the FEL. No chains, either. On the other hand, the turfs do fill up with mud pretty quickly, and for FEL dirt digging, you do get a lot of wheel spinning.

With regard to mowing, my BX22 with the MMM, fluids and me, weighs over 2000 lbs., so I can tear up the lawn a little in sharp turns and with direction changes. It is, however, surprisingly "light on its feet" when mowing (even on wet ground) with the turfs.

</font><font color="blue" class="small">( If you get some bar tires, I can sell you some turf tires. Had them on once. The bar tires never have torn up my lawn (2wd only). I would go with the bar tires, and then again the additional set only cost me $270, with rims.
So what the heck, get both. Easy for me to spend your money, huh?

I agree with this word for word. When I bought both sets of tires and rims, I didn't want changing back and forth to take much time so I went to Harbor Freight and bought a hydraulic jack for about $40 and an electric impact wrench for about another $40 with a socket the size of the BX lug nuts for about $2. The couple of times that I did change the tires only took about 5 minutes. I wanted this to be like changing the tires on a racecar in the pit. It doesn't take a very large hydraulic jack to get the entire front or rear half of a BX an inch up into the air. Three or four pumps on the hydraulic lever puts the both front wheels in the air, five quick pops on the gun and a tire is off, five more and new tire is on, same for other side; rotate bar and front is down; repeat on rear; you're done in 5 min. I do the same thing on our AWD van when I want snow tires on for a winter trip to the Sierra. I find changing tires faster and easier than chaining, but then again I usually did my chaining laying in the snow on the roadside,

If you're anywhere close to me, I'll sell you my turfs with rims for half price and you can order your tractor with the bars on. For those times when you really need the bars (soft ground) they will be more effective than chains on turf ties. Chains do have their place-one inch of hard ice glazing atop pavement on a hill is an example. You are going to use the turf tires, that is a given. The question to ask yourself now is this, "For those times when I need more traction than the turfs provide, which will fill my needs better, chaining the turfs or pit fast change to bar tires?"

Good luck Matt,
Tom

I'm in Nazareth PA, I can't figure out how to add the location to the details on the left column. Not visible in my profile anywhere unless I'm looking at the wrong place.

At the top of almost any page, click on "My Home". Scroll down to "Personal information, password,...." and click. When the page comes up, you'll see all kinds of personal info. you can edit. When a person wants to know about you, he or she can click on "Scrounger" anyplace it appears in blue and your personal profile page will come up showing everything you've written.

PA would be expensive shipping. If you make a new post entitled "PA, want to buy used BX turf tires", you may well get responses from folks close enough drive to, or cheap shipping.

You have partially filled in your loaction so at least you have been there before.

Click on "My Home"
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on
"Personal Information, e-mail, password, etc"
Scroll down a bit and you will see an empty box with "Geographic Location" above it.

Fill that in.

Went into my Home and the fields are not visibile. In the signature field I see the html for the info, but no place to actually edit it. I sent the forum help an email since I think I'm missing something.

Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox, etc. are all part of the same company. Put them on the same computer and they automatically consolidate bookmarks into one list. When I want to post a hyperlink on here using the URL function, these same browsers will not let me paste into the pop-up window. I have to go to IE to do that. Go figure. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

So, any new thoughts on what to do? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I had similiar issues, I deleted Netscape and added some of the Open in IE extensions to Firefox for when I needed IE. Upgrading to the latest Firefox at getfirefox.com also helped me.

At least my info fields are all filled out.

On another note, I'm planning to go with bar tires on the BX2230. I dont have a wet lawn and I need to cut in some serious atv trails this summer while in upstate ny.
