I had a 276D that did the same thing for months. I troubleshot every inch of of the ignition circuitry without finding anything wrong. Sometimes click, sometimes instant start. Finally out of frustration I called a dealer. He said, "Oh yeah!, there was a design change. That originally came without an ignition relay. We have a relay retrofit kit that will solve the problem." It did, that was years ago.
Without the relay the full solenoid current was going thru the key switch which really wasn't designed to hande that much current, so the key contacts were burning causing an intermittent bad connection. With an ohmmeter they checked fine but would add just enough resistance under load to not allow the solenoid current to go to full potential.
With the retrofit now the key only turns on the relay and the relay handles all the solenoid current.
Not sure if this will apply to your problem but I would check to see if there is an ignition switch relay.
