Sounds like an interesting siphon system. Also sounds a little more complicated than what I need, but I could be wrong. How big is the reservoir you are speaking of? That might help determine the pipe size that I should consider.

I like the idea of removing water from the bottom of the pond.

Also, for clarification, I am looking for (the rare) overflow release only - there is no "flow" to my pond.

Dobber, the pond that was dug out is fairly large. At its deepest its 25' deep and about 400' x 200'. What determines your outlet size is the watershed area. This particular pond had a fairly small watershed and got away with just a 18" drain. That may seem a bit large, but thats all it has. Most dams in our area require a safety or area where the flow will be allowed to go over a spillway in the event the usual drainage system cannot handle extreme flows or becomes blocked. This particular pond has a continual inflow, very slight but enough to always keep it full. It does not use a siphon system, just simply the head pressure of the water level to force the water from the bottom up to the drainage box. Its a little difficult to explain but really quite simple. If I get the chance, I'll shoot a few shots of the drain system to get the folks here a better idea. Rat...
