I agree; however, as adults, especially those of us who are parents or celebrities who serve as role models, we owe a certain moral allegiance to those who look up to us. I firmly believe this, and try to live by it. In my own personal experience, I gave up smoking cigarettes...cold turkey...because I was convinced that I could not be the man, the father and the Christian I wanted to be and still smoke cigarettes. Besides...did you ever try to convince your kids that smoking was bad while lighting up a Winston?

Yep... I quit drinking at 39, and quit chewing at 50... The kids deserved better. H ell... so did I...

I parked my den TV on The Science Channel today and would glance at it occasionally. Some episodes of Mysteries of the Abandoned & How Its Made can be interesting.

I still have DirecTV with 300+ channels, but I really like my DVR. Like Blacklist and NCIS. Liked Cops and Live PD. Anybody remember The Bridge, I liked that.

I got laid off of my construction job in the Detroit area and was getting a divorce, so moved to California to work with my cousin in the tree business. Got there

on January 6, 1982, I was 35 years old. On the Sunday before my young cousin and I left for California I wanted a fire in the fireplace. We went outside to get wood

and the wind chill was -45, wicked on your face. A couple of months later I heard about this Bar that had a good shrimp basket in Woodside CA. So on a Saturday I went

up there stood at the end of the bar and got a beer. Almost finished my beer and somebody walks in and goes to the bathroom. I thought the bartender was going to wet

his pants when he said do you know who that is and I said no. He said is was Randy Cross, I said who is Randy Cross. He said he plays for the 49ers. I said I don't watch

sports. Randy Cross comes and stands next to me and orders a beer for him and me. I thanked him for the beer and told him that I don't watch sports and don't know who

he is. I have a Yooper accent and he asked me where I was from, told him Detroit area Michigan. He said how can you people live there it's so cold. 49ers were there at the

Silverdome in Pontiac in January for the Super Bowl. He said they almost froze going from the Hotel to the bus. I told him that was unusual weather and it's not like that all

the time. He drank his beer and left. Seemed like a nice guy. I looked up his age now and he would have been around 27 at the time.

Never into pro sports figures but sure were a lot of them around the Bay Area... early grade-school my classmates father was Oakland Raider Billy Cannon... didn't know anything about it except the family spoke with a Louisiana accent... LSU Heisman... kids were always running up to him and he would throw the football... back then kids of celebrities went to public school and might be around a year or two until Dad was traded...

Years later a retired Oakland Raider lived 5 houses away from me... I know he liked football and one day the street was packed with cars around the block... one of the neighbors said do you know who that is and that is and that is... I said no... just washing my car in the driveway... I was maybe 22...

I think sometimes celebrities like to be just like any other person... take their kids trick or treat... wave as you drive by... etc... I'm sure there are others that can't live without being in the spotlight too...

John Madden was just a regular guy... really personable and very approachable...

Brother worked for the A's in high school and got to know a lot of the players... they were mostly very kind to the kids and the kids were told to respect their space if they wanted to keep working... some made careers of it.

We were doing demo work on a remodel job and he got permission to use one of the dumpsters... they got picked up full or empty and his boss said OK as long as there was room the night before... drove onto the Oakland Coliseum field in my old Plymouth with box trailer in tow... kind of surreal...

Roller Derby was really big at one time... and another neighbor was one of their star players... always wanted to go and she offered tickets but Dad didn't think Derby was a good example.... Joan Weston - Wikipedia

Lots of sports programming at the time but the only one we watched was ABC Wide World of Sports and the Timex commercials...

For a lack of quality programs we have been watching slightly older series mostly based on critical reviews and acclaim...
One such series is 'Mad Men'...it has been called by some to be the best TV show ever...I would put it in the top 5-6 anyway...

For anyone growing up in the early to late 60's you will find it amazingly relative...The sets are extremely authentic the writing and acting is superb...

The crux of the plot is about advertising and all the products and advertising will bring back a plethora of memories from the era...also the background news stories are authentically timed and relative...like I said...anyone who was growing up then will immediately relate...

There are 7 seasons with 13 episodes in all but the last that has 14... it starts to drag slightly about the middle of the 5th season but picks right back up again...IMO it is well worth the watch...for anyone watching the entire series the final scene in the final episode is especially satisfying...

Found a lot of my younger coworkers don't have a clue of TV before the 90's

Today some said Ginger or Maryanne and few grasped the context...

My lunch break consists of Rick Steve's and the Beverly Hillbillies. I'm starting to fall for granny, she is the funniest person on that show.

This could go on the "You might be getting even older" thread.

If you are starting to think Granny's kind of hot...

They would be lost if you mentioned "Mr. Peepers"...and I suspect, most of the members here would be too.
