Two Bites in the Blink of an Eye

Couple of years ago the wife and I were removing dead leaves under the porch steps, and my bare hand was within 6 inches of a copperhead, smaller than that one, but he could have bit me. The wife saw it and I grabbed a small shovel and pinned it down, and between the 2 of us we dispatched it. Sorry, too close for comfort.. I don't mind snakes away from the house, but "fangy ones" near me don't last long.

It's a good idea Bruce but a snake will wiggle out of that thing and bite you sooner than you can say "crickey!" I handle quite a few rattlesnakes each summer, living in the CA foothills. Like the OP, I prefer to relocate them since they were here before me. I bought the Gentle Giant snake handling tongs and these will let you grab the snake securely without injuring it and at the same time will prevent it from wiggling loose. The tongs are also heavy duty, top notch. Professionals use them. A good investment if you expect to be doing this sort of thing on a regular basis. Gentle Giant 72 inch Tong

Not for snakes, for the leaves in the meter box.

Oh my, I'm glad your grandmother is OK!

We don't have any snakes here in the UK thank goodness.

Jeremy ... same here as far as grandma goes, glad she is well. Those rascals this time of year are in spots like that ... everyday I tell my wife "Hold up, did you check for snakes?" I find them under sheets of roofing tin, in piles of lumber, piles of post. Got to keep them on the mind.

Hope all is well with you.

Grandma is home and doing good. I cleaned out the meter box and put mothballs all in it to keep out the snakes. I also but out mothballs and snake away all along her flower beds and around her garage trying to keep her safe. She is 86 years old and still gets out does all the yard work. Dr said she should be back to 100% in a few weeks. Thanks again to all who have posted. I did find 3 more copperheads around the house and have removed them to a new home deeper in the woods.
