That last photo is a classic. It's sort of like the guy holding up the fish in one hand and the rod in the other. Look what I did with my tractor and plow. Even nicely framed. Just beautiful

( remember.. the ford 9N built back in 1939 with 26 eng hp was designed to pull a 2 bottom plow.. 2-12 or 2-14.. or even a 1-16. )

I believe our 9N's serial # is early 1940, and we are pulling a 16" single bottom. It still has power and generally spins out under a hard pull, but the Hydraulics are shot and just wont lift a plow without high RPMS, which is not good for those engines.

My main reason for asking about a 2 vs 3 bottom was the weight to HP issue. I am confident that a 55 (47 PTO) HP tractor will pull a 3 bottom with no problem. But I was thinking about not enough weight to get all the HP to the ground.

LetsRoll being a 2 WD , and my unit will be a 4WD , with the few extra HP , in the right ground conditions the TC or DX 55 should perform with no problem.

LetsRoll posting recently about a 2 bottom , I figured I would ask how well his setup performed and if he was constanly spinning out.

Thanks for the Input.

If you are only gonna be plowin' 1.25 acres, don't even give the 3 bottom any consideration. Even though you have the HP (an IH 350 didn't have nearly 55 HP but had/has the "guts" and the weight to pull a 3 X 14" all day on a tank of fuel). The main thing is HAVE FUN! You'll be done faster with a 3 bottom and nobody wants that. Also, If the ground is a tad wet or too dry, you'll be wishing that you only had 2 bottoms. Just my $.02. BobG in VA

I believe that's a Deere model 125 plow(?). If so, I have an owners manual in my posession. If you're interested, PM me. I'm in Ky too.

Horsepower as it relates to plowing is a black art. The old 8N's would pull 2X14"s with 20 (+ or -) hp. But 40 hp won't pull 4 x 14"s. (or even THREE 14"s) The variable is ground speed. With more power, you simply pull the same tool faster.

55 HP ESPECIALLY on a 4WD, should handle 3 X 14"s. Pulling a plow for all a tractor's worth is hard on them. I'd suggest something smaller unless you're going to be in a big field. 2 X 14"s or 2 X 16"s would be my suggestion. If it pulls easy, just go a little faster.

You do realize it is a governed engine. You can safely run it under load for extended periods of time at up to belt pulley speed. I believe that is up there around 1800 rpm.. as pto is around 1500 or so.

As for the shot lift.. sounds like it may just need some tlc. A new top gasket, bottom gasket, pto flange gasket, side cover gaskets, lift piston, piston oring and backup washer, relief valve, and halves gaskets run less than 90$ with shipping. That assumes your lift cyl isn't scored too deeply and can be honed. if it can't.. double that to 180. Also assumes that pump chambers aren't cracked and that plungers are ok. ( Most of the time they are ).

Anyway.. that 'standard' 90$ service takes about 8-9 hours using only a couple different size wrenches and a torque wrench, and cleaning supplies.

Also.. if the lift is a tad weak on the thin UTF fluid, use the oem spec 90wt gl-1 or gl-3 oils available at napa or TSC, or even a penzoil 80w90 gearplus gl-4 yellow metal safe type oil. Castrol makes a YMS oil as well.

It's not a bad job... a non-mechanic can do it via 'cookbook' with an I&T fo4 manual in hand and a bag of oil dry and paper towles /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That's what ballast is for.. wet tires, rim weights, front suitcase weights, frame weights.. etc.

The original Governor Housing had been busted someone TRIED /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif to braze it back together. The WONDERFUL /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif job that they did, would not allow the Governor Balls to spin freely in housing there fore it never worked. So I found a "Working Governor" on Ebay and bought it for $34.00.

I figure She is turning 66 this year, it's time to Semi Retire her so she may still be around for my Grandson to purrr around on once he is old enough. That is if there is still any Fuel in say 2050 !!!

Buy a New machine now, that hopefully will still be running and parts will be available for, Then my son and grandson will have something to work on Like I am now with my Grandfathers 9N he bought in '78 with the Broken Governor /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I'm needing one of those. Actually I would prefer just to rent one. Would my 4wd 36HP Kubota pull a 2 bottom plow? Pretty heavy clay soil, and I would (could) till it first.

Also, I'm guessing it's not a rollover plow... how do you get it flop the dirt in the same direction?

Right now, I don't have any needs for a manual. Actually, I don't know the model number of my plow. For all I know, it could be a F110. I've looked the plow over and can not find anything telling the model number. I can see where the sticker was at but I cant read it anymore. Next winter, I plan to take this plow apart and totally re-do it. At that time, if I run into trouble, I'll contact you about your manual. Thanks for the offer.
