Dang, If you bought the gun in '60, aren't ya ready for retirement now? : )

3RRL, did you find the guy that stole the motor out of that Arctic Cat? I hate thieves.LOL.

CA still enforces the "Assault Rifle" ban, no? I am a big AR fan and if I recall, removeable mags are a no-no in the peoples republic.

I believe that to be effectively correct sir. "We" have our own ban which was unaffected by the Fed status

The City/County of 'Frisco passed a hand gun ban that, I believe I read in the American Rifleman mag, was struck down in court recently ... thanks to our support of the NRA. Possible appeal pending I'd guess

3RRL, I was mostly kidding you as except for my 4 year volunteer stint 63-67 in the service I lived in California from late 1962 through 2000, San Diego after discharge (1967-2000) and I watched the rules change from the before the Kennedy assasination situation to the current mess.

Prior to the Kennedy shoot it was legal to carry a loaded gun in the car but it should be in plain sight, not concealed. It was legal to strap on your hog leg (in plain sight) and walk down the street but it was NOT A GOOD IDEA since every officer would go to BATTLE STATIONS, put you up against the wall and give you a thorough field interrogation.

Post Kennedy the law said you could not have a loaded gun in a public place (nor ammunition affixed thereunto which coverd the fact that an autoloader with no round in the chambeer is technically not loaded and the or affixed thereunto phrase covered the magazine.

Then came the INTERPRETATION of the new laws which took away as much or more than the law, strictly defined, ever did.

There may be laws on the books wilth procedures for getting a concealed carry permit but do you have one? Can your wife get one? Can just any non-felon non-domestic violence adult apply for and receive a concealed carry permit with no other SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES other than choosing to be able to legally carry a concealed weapon? I don't think so.

Oklahoma and many other states are "SHALL ISSUE" states. Any non-felon non-domestic violence not mental patient who can pass the required course of training can then apply for a permit and the state SHALL ISSUE. The difference is that the shall issue states disallow certain special case people and states like CA issue permits only to folks with special circumstances. It is like the difference between the American jurisprudence system, based to a large degree on English common law, where you are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and the legal system of Mexico which is based on the French system where you are guilty until proven innocent.

Admittedly when with me my wife does not frequentlly carry her .357 mag but with the number of mountain lion sitghtings in our yard it is in her pocket when she goes out to fill the bird feeders and such. I feel better knowing that when she travels alone she has a means of defending herself. Not just an everyday ordinary citizen of California can have that personal protection, legally.

I bet a lot of tractor guys are gun guys as well. Va. is still an open carry state. Strap it on and go. They tend to freak out when I walk into the bank with a 1911 on my hip.

shaley, One of the big materials supply houses in these parts had an employee who found out that if you post a "no guns allowed" sign (red circle with red slash throuigh a handgun) on the door that concealed carry folks would have to leave their guns outside, and so they did. After about a week or so of totally plumeting sales to large order buyers (contractors) the owner was comiserating with Paul Abel (Able?), big namem in gun training, about it and was clued in as to the problem. The majority of the contractors were legal concealed carry and rather than have to leave their guns in the truck (or support an anti-gun buisness) they voted with their feet and went elsewhere. The signs came off immediately and buisness as usual resumed.

All the banks and post offices and such permit concealed carry. Just every once in a while you see a prohibition posted on a door.

I have difficulty understanding how a continuing plethora of new laws will have much effect on gun crime since gun crimes perpetrated by legal concealled carry liscensees is virtually non-existant and the "BAD GUYS" don't follow the laws anyway.

Oh, I forgot... reality has no bearing on the issue. Anti-gun groups have their agenda and reality doesn't enter into it.

kossetx,
Yes I am semi retired, but I was 10 in 1960. I bought that gun with my older brother at a gas station/ hardware/ parts/ sporting goods store and walked home with it in the box.

jmt1271,
LOL... when I first saw pictures of this 250cc Arctic Cat I thought the same thing? But it's there.
HomeBrew2 answered your other question. At one time, my Browning BAR 30:06 was suspect....not sure if it still is though? Another ridiculous law that has nothing to do with bad guys.

patrick_g,
You are correct in your summary. I can remember those days as well. I sure agree with your last statement about the bad guys. I'll never understand why laws are put in force for everybody just to deal with what the bad guys are doing? Why can't they just focus on the bad guys and make them stop breaking the laws in the first place?

It doesn't matter how many gun laws they put into effect as only we, the law abiding citizens will abide, and they will continue to ignore the new laws, just as they ignored the old ones! A little different, but when I had my own business, my manager would come to me and tell me we needed another "policy" to deal with a certain individual because he was not adhering to some existing policy. I told him to fire that guy.

shaley,
I wish we could still do that here as patrick refers to in the old days. I remember hunting in Wyoming about 20 years ago, stopping in a bar for refreshments after a long drive from California. Something I'll never forget.... Every single guy at the bar had a sidearm strapped to his leg! It was way cool to see.

Rob, Of a similar note to your "western bar" where I doubt you witnessed a shootout, I recall when all the anti-gun folks were predicting massive numbers of shootouts in public places with lots of collateral dammage to innocent standers by if folks could get easy access to concealed weapons permits. Well, we got fairly easy access to concealed weapons permits in several states around the west and midwest (not including the left coast) and the incidence of gun violations by legally liscensed concealed carry folks is essentially non-existant.

I carry virtually all the time out of the house, hoping I never ever need the weapon but having it in case I do. It is like insurance, you have it but hope you never need it. We are glad there are fire drills in schools and hope they are never needed. But it is better to be prepared and not need the preperation than to be unprepared and wish it were different.

I have a safe room built way beyond FEMA recommendations. I live at the approximate ground zero center of tornado alley. Statistics from the NOAA severe weather folks at Norman, Oklahoma (home of OU) show that any given residential structure in this area can expect to receive significant tornadic damage (significant is life threatening to any occupants) on the order of once every 4000 years. Then why the expensive safe room? What if "MY YEAR" is "THIS YEAR?" Same thinking prompts my concealed carry. Probably won't need it but what if you do?

How many airliners have crashed out at sea and had passengers survive? Why do the airlines have rafts and floating seat cushions?

Man, this is Soooo true!!

Timber,
In comparison with some of these guys, mine is a modest collection. LOL ... I will say since joining TBN, my rural "wants" have miraculously changed into dire "needs" somehow??? I am thankful I have a loving, caring and understanding wife in these matters.
