Two stroke diesel??

bgott, Just a couple comments; 1. Compared to just about every other duty in the Navy except a SEAL team, submariners are the most highly crosstrained/substitutable troops they have. Of course a supply clerk may have been the back up cook, second backup, morale and welfare guy, etc, but you never know... They cross train the "H" "E" Double toothpicks out of the nukie sub jocks. 2. Yeah, the reduced magnetic signature could have made compass adjusting easier but what of the out of work flinders bar manufacturers?

I know they run electrical cables around on ships and energize them to try to offset/neutralize the ships magnetic field (regular steel ships) but I don't know if they did that on those particular craft. I am somewhat familiar with GMC 6-71 and 4-71 but not the Detroit 6-71 in cast iron or aluminum. Same engine? Or accidental/coincidental name similarity?

Actually, I think they always had Detroit Diesel on the valve covers, except maybe in a GMC truck.

Thanks bgott. Now I know nearly twice as much about marine diesels. (Same stuff about two diferent brands) The ole Johnson-Evinrude trick. Used to love to hear the old timers argue over the relative merits of Johnson vs Evinrude outboards, while I knew that they were merged and made in the same factory years ealier that the discussions.

There is such things, as others have mentioned. WT28, the water tender at our Fire Station is an '82 GMC with a 350hp Detriot in it. It is one loud engine. It's not too bad in the cab, but when you are out on the pump panel, it is really loud.

I like the 350hp 8.9l Cummins in our new engine. Now that is a great motor! Sounds just like my TC Dodge, with a deeper rumble/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Lanz Bulldog tractors had a single cylinder two-stroke hot-bulb engine (a concept of Herbert Akroyd Stuart). Against the common beliefs, it is not a diesel engine. It has a compression only 1 to 6, whereas for diesel engines the compression is 1 to 12, or more. It was rather a precursor of the future diesel engine.

There seems to be one 2 stroke missing from the list. Cummins built one in the early to mid 80s designated the 555 or better knowm as the triple nickle

Missing because the 555 was a four stroke engine.

Oldy but a goody!
I used to drive a 1974 GMC with a Detroit in it, 5 and 2 trans, tandem rear end, city cab.
This was the one that would run backwards!
If you screwed up you had 2 speeds forward and 10 in reverse! But not for long.
I was backing under a very heavy load and stalled the engine.
When it shot me back out it started the engine in reverse!
Exhaust came out of the breather.
Luckily I knew what happened and shut it off before no oil pressure (pump running backwards) could hurt anything.

No. The 555 and 903’s were v8 4 stroke engines. There was also 265 v8’s all built by Cummins.

Here's a good article on deisels in boats. It explains the differences between the 2 stroke Detroit and the 4 strokers.

I operated a Detroit Deisel 6-71 in a ground power unit at the local airport for years. Man, when you put the power on, that thing would blow your ears off! The 6-71 is an awsome engine that will last forever with a little care.

The 6-71s were the military work horse in WWII. Thy were used in everything you can think of. Big marine applications from small boats to auxiliary systems. Big use for generators. GM even carried them over after the buyout. There were several smaller and larger models also, different #s. The 6 indicated the # of cylinders I believe.

The big diesel used in Motor Vessels (MV cargo ships) are 2 stroke. Some of the cylinders are up to 10' in diameter. They burn #6 black oil also called "Bunker C". When cold it is hard tar; has to be kept heated to keep it moving. They heat it to something like 600 C. They centrifuge it to remove chunks, rocks, debris. The heat boils off any water. hey start them with high pressure air, huge compressor and storage tank. I bailed out the Chief Engineer by fixing his defunct refrigeration systems and he gave me the nickel tour explained the plant well and then proceeded to ply me with excellent schnapps trying to get the bill reduced. He was a great Norwegian. I was well lit up to go home.

Let me add to the knowledge a bit. The first number is the number of cylinders. The second number is the pressure that the blower puts into the crankcase in pounds of pressure. No wonder they leaked with that kind of crankcase pressure "slobbering jimmy". So lets start at the lowest I know about.

John Deere 435 had a 2-53. There was also a 4-53 and a 6-53? Wikipedia would know more. There was also 4-71's and 6-71's. 4-53's were in Oliver tractors and 6-71's were in just about everything. 6-71's could be had with an additional turbocharger pushing air into the blower. 230 stock - 290 horsepower with a turbocharger. I'm doing this all from memory so I could have some details wrong.

The above engines are all inline engines. Next that I know about are the V series. 6V-71 and 6V-92 "silver 92" and the 8V-71 called a 318 because that was the horsepower it put out. There was also an 8V-92. The largest I know about is a V16.

The oil patch loved these 2 cycle diesels on drilling rigs as the engine accelerated considerably faster than a 4 stroke.
