Uh, actually it can. WiFi is regulated by power, not antenna gain. In theory your laptop has the same power so the same high gain antenna transmitting at the Ubiquiti doubles as a high gain receiver. Anything that can hear it should be able to talk to it.remember wifi is a 2 way street, just because the AP can yell that loud, does not mean the device can talk back, most don't reccomend the long range.
But then there is low power WiFi in telephones. That might not work.
The unique thing about a long range WiFi device is that is uses a modified WiFi protocol to account for the speed of light taking longer at longer distances else you could hack an antenna on a WRT-54 (as many have done). And then hack the firmware (as many have done).
