I'm really going to stir things up here but GM has never had an original idea (Corvair was just a poor copy of VW). ALMOST everything they have ever came out with was done by someone else first. Volkswagen offered a side door tent option in the 1960's and 70's with the Microbus/Campmobile. I did a quick search and found a photo...

I'll go with the Aztec and it's clone, the Rendezvous from Buick. I suspect those engineers never get out to the parking lot and see most folks like to see a certain proportion to tires versus vehicle.

The Element is like the H2. I drove the H2 when they first hit and was really surprised about ugly. I'd never really been inside of ugly before. That test drive taught me that ugly is lot better from the inside looking out than vice versa. I guess that's why some ugly people laugh and do good at telling jokes. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I see my fair share of Volvo's on the road today. Perhaps because there weren't as many manufacturers at at time has contributed to the diluting of the old main-stays. I don't recall seeing any Hyundai, Kia, Lexus, Acura, Lexus, Infinity or Suzuki automobiles back in the 70's.

Hey!!... quit knocking the Aztec! I hear that all 4 people who bought one are very happy! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I kind of like the Element... cute ugly. The Aztek... butt ugly for sure. The Avalanche has to be up there as well.

And to whomever posted the VW microbus/tent photo... thanks! We had one just like that growing up. Many fond memories of family vacations as well as being a daily driver. Woefully underpowered but it was great space inside for a family of six /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yep, I think the Aztec still holds the ugly crown. I wonder if the Honda Element would be so bad if they could manage to make it all one color.

I was told by someone, can't remember who at the moment, that the H2 was designed by women for women. Anyone know if that's their target audience? When I see one It makes me laugh because I believe their drivers think they have a downsized original HumVee as opposed to a squared off Yukon. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif As much as I would LOVE to have an original Hummer, the H2 leaves me cold. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I got a magazine that says Chrysler is coming out with a hot rod station wagon. They are planning on putting one of their hemi truck engines in it. I'm a station wagon freak and am really looking forward to seeing what actually hits the market. Here's a picture of very small picture. While I'm not brand loyal to anything I think Chrysler has it in the styling department hands down.

Aztec and Focus are the first to come to mind when thinking pure ugly.

I like the looks of the Avalanche, but would be concerned about the strength of the bulkhead between me and a 500# reel of wire in case of panic stop/wreck. I never drove one, but it looks like the visibility may be a bit blocked due to all the roof pillars.

The Element has is sort of "appealingly ugly". In the utilitarian class of vehicle, I look at things differently. Sure, a Tahoe is a great looking rig, but there's also something interesting about the Mad Max/Road Warrior/A-Team cobbled-together battle wagons........................chim

hey, you guys know that the pop-up camper is still offered on the euro van and the new micro bus when it comes out.

One of my youngest son's friends bought a camper bus a couple years ago. That kid was born 30 years late. He and his girl friend would easily pass for hippies. One of my buds back in the 70's referred to them as Venereal Wagons.

When he bought the van, he had his friends get together and paint it up like something from the 70's. My son started college recently, and he said there was a VW van "just like the one Travis has, but looks like it's in mint condition" in the college parking lot.......................chim

I bought an Element a couple of months ago for my wife. She's not concerned about it's appearance as much as it's utility. It has been a great vehicle for her. She was always using my pickups for her dog and horse activities. Now, she can carry everything in the Honda and let others trailer the horses. And I get my big pickup back /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif although it's got 60,000 more miles on it compared to the 20,000 I've put on it /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
