ULSD clogging filters at 0-10 degrees

Like I said, I guess it depends on brand/manufacturer. I personally have never heard that you can "add to much". I know the one I sell you can keep adding it. It's just that at higher treat ratio's the effect is lowered because it can only modify the wax crystals so much.

So can someone clarify a point.........Can you add too much anti-gel?

1 gal of depressant to treat 1000ga of fuel is about only 1 oz to treat my whole 8 gal tank. Is it a problem to add 2 oz....how exact must the measurement be? How much is too much?

Thanks

I have used only Power Service and I don't think you are likely to add too much to a point that would cause problems. The bottle indicates a standard dose rate (I think it's 32oz/100gal) and a double dose rate. I would imagine a whole 32oz bottle in a 20 gallon tank wouldn't cause problems, though it would be a waste of money. I don't have a really precise way to measure it so I suspect I am often closer to the double dose than the standard dose.

YMMV

Pour point is not a reliable measure to predict when you will gel up. If you have a fuel filter of ANY kind, it will be plugged long before reaching the pour point limit temperature. And all filters are not created equal, either...a 2 micron will plug up quicker than a 10; a filter near the end of it's useful life with plug before a new one, etc.

Pour point depressants are meant to be used with heated fuel systems, i.e., just keep the cloudy fuel flowing until it can get to a fuel heater.

Their problem most likely has nothing to do with the science to prove anything about ULSD. Old LSD diesel would have done the same thing.

thank you MR.

the gel point has nothing to do with the sulfur content

Probably right. But it must have something to do with the new refining process because all of these problems showing up in the first winter of ULSD introduction sure seems to point a finger at the one thing that has changed...

The people that run buses in Wisconsin, New York, Pennsylvania, etc., have been through winters before and know how to deal with cold weather. So do the fuel suppliers; they know the blend ratios from previous winters and I'm sure that's what they're using. Problem is, the game has changed. #2 ULSD *apparently* needs more #1 in the blend than did the old fuel.

I think the new ULSD is crap.I have a 70 hp international tractor and a compact tractor that I have run every year even in colder weather and had no problems.I live near Buffalo NY and its bee about 0 at night with a wsf of about -30 at times and I have been doubling the amount of power service and it has done little to help.Im keeping 5 gallon cans in my garage with no wind and temp of about 0 to 10 above and the stuff looks like lime green milky syrup with a double dose of power service.I had to change the filters on the IH today and it was full of gelled fuel even with PS white and a small amount of 911 I dont care what lab tests say the stuff Im getting from mobil or sunoco is crap.

I have to think that some refineries are doing things different from others. We should be hearing the same problems from Michigan, Minnesota, the Dakotas, Montana, Idaho and Alaska if there was a fundamental problem with ULSD. I have heard zero problems here in Michigan, and I asked my dad in Colorado and he hasn't heard of any problems there either. I'm not saying that the people in New York don't know what they're doing - obviously they have just as much cold weather experience - but maybe their refinery or blender chose a different process or additive that has a side effect of raising the slush point.

For offroad use, I think you can still buy high-sulfur diesel made just like it has been for decades.

When you can find it as it's becoming scarce in certain parts of the country. Be sure you are not getting home heating oil as HHO is not always "real diesel" and has less and different additives.

my filter clogged up on my 2210. It had been out in the cold so I should nt be surprised. Just an idea could you take the filter off during cold weather , perhaps wrap the filter cap in a plastic bag and then when you get to use the tractor again reattach. Any dangers in doing this???

I don't think your idea would solve the problem. The clog occurs when the fuel "waxes up", which means that the higher melting fractions are starting to solidify. The solid fuel is stopped by the filter, just like dirt would be. But, when warm it melts and the clog goes away. being out in the cold and waxing poses no long term ill's, aside from not being able to run it.
