BTDT: you're the first one to ever ask. Well done :)

Iowa-kinder: ya beat me to it! And you're correct. Also well done :)

Jay,

Black smoke on startup is the fuel system adding extra fuel (like a gas choke) to get it to start. That's normal. Not cranking fast enough to start, that's not normal.

The USLD seems to react better with Howes fuel treat than power service white. Still, 2 or 3x dose has been needed around here.

Where do you get the Howe's stuff?

I'm a Johnny-come-lately to this discussion, all I know is we're having major problems with our diesel powered vehicles, and we didn't in years past.

I'm not sure what they use in the Power Service but the results seem to be the same around here. It dosen't seem to have much effect on gel point unless it's in high doses. Howes and Texas Refinery Corp. anti-gel additives seem to be working with the ULSD fine at regular treat levels.

To All:

I am now running my ULSD with an ~3X "load" of Power Service White without real difficulty. My NH TC29DA did run a little "rough" briefly the other day when plowing in 4 degree F temperatures (wind chill = -20F). I am not familiar with Howes and/or Texas Refinery products. Are they available through local car parts/accessory stores? Jay

I use dyed ULSD in both my dozer and Kubota B2710. I have always used 3oz of Power Service white to 5 gallons of fuel. I have never had any issues with hard starting, rough running, or gelling fuel. I don't run the dozer in the winter but the tractor stays in an unheated garage. I also had no issues this past week in the cold and high wind chill.

As always, your mileage may vary.

The more people I speak with locally it really seems to depend on who your fuel supplier is. I have had people that get their fuel in Baltimore county MD that are not having problems and when they get a fill up in Carroll county it gel's. Different suppliers treating their fuel differently seems to be the real problem. Some have figured out the best way to treat it while others have not.

jbrumberg - Howes can usually be found at truck stops and sometimes in heavy truck dealers parts departments. Texas Refinery's additives are purchased directly from TRC and shipped to your door. If your interested in TRC's additives just go to Texas Refinery Corp. Specialty Lubricants and Greases TRC , go to products and they are in the fuel stabilizers category.

You mentioned the wind chill. Don't forget the wind chill does not have any effect on anything but people. It is what a set temperature with wind speed figured in "FEELS" like to the human body. In reality though the wind does not actually lower the temperature. The only effect wind really has on inanimate objects (that would be your tractor) is that it may cool them off faster to whatever the ambient air temp is.

DieselPower:

Thank you for the product information and sharing your knowledge in many posts :D. I know that the tractor is really only influenced by the ambient temperature. I included the wind chill temperatures from my weather station to show everyone how "tough" I am .

By the way can you mix Power Service White amended diesel with the Howes additive?

I really don't see why not. Afterall, fuel distributors treat diesel fuel with additives at the bulk dispensing facility's when they fill the fuel trucks. Also, I can't say I have ever read anywhere that you can't use one additive when some other manufacturers additive is already mixed in the fuel.

The typical "treatment" at the fuel distribution point is blending #1 with #2, not adding additives. The only additive one could ask for was a pour point depressant, which does nothing for cloud point.
