I have a friend who buried a 40' "sea container" into a hillside with about 2' of topsoil over the top. He did brace the sides, walls and floor every 8' with 4x4 posts which he also used as part of the framework for his shelving. As long as you don't mind stepping over a 4x4 brace every 8 feet it looks like it will hold up. He said he researched the containers and a "sea container" holds up to moisture better. He seemed as if he did his due diligence as he calculated the strength of which type of wood post to use. He wedged the uprights between the roof and floor posts for his bracing and secured them with some Simpson type hangars. He ran power for lights, a freezer and spare outlets in the container also.
Next time I see him I will have to ask him how it held up this spring to our rain and moisture.
