Where mine is buried...it is from 1" to 10" and I can't tell a noticeable difference in the signal. You can hear the signal with a choke coil paralleld in with xmitter wires and use an AM radio tuned to 600mhz. It's a pulse sound.
This is used to check for a break in the wire.

Just use the flags till you can come up with something different.

Before you tear up the turff you might want to check with Cabela's because they have one now that does not require burying any cable. I don't know its range or capablities but it would be worth checking out.

I went to the local rental store and got a sod cutter. It was like a very big edger, cut a small channel about 1/2 inch wide. I was able to do about 2 acres, buried and finished with the cutter returned in less then a day. Not sure if it was the cutter or the rental charge... but it worked fast! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Early last year was in the same boat with three dogs, new house and forty acres.

Looked at the invisible fence, wasn't sure how much/long to go.

Ended up going with the training collars and recievers.

Dogs get to far from the house and for what ever reason didn't come when you called, you hit hit them with a beep, and if they didn't come at that point, then a "zap" at varying degrees.

Can take them for a walk all over the property, and if they don't come when you call (getting too far away), usually a beep and they know to get their tails back to you.

Works pretty well.

Only downside is that you just can't let them out and "forget about them".

We did however build a 50'x80' fenced run for them if we wanted to just leave them outside and "forget about them".

Only concearn with the invisible fence is our yellow lab can be "sneaky". We were afraid that if she got past the invisible fence line, that she may not come back due to the fence.

Good luck.

This is EXACTLY what I want to hear. Me and the SO are having issues with the dogs. Her issue really. The dogs listen to me because I act like I am not a nice person.

With her they seem to think a lot of things are - OK.

I tried to impress upon her the need for collars since she would like to walk with them, but ended up spending a day and over 100 bucks in fencing. Wrong choice in my mind.

I shall share your story with her.

Thanks.

Once ours got trained to the collars, and to where the underground fence line ran, we have been able to "let 'em out and forget about 'em" without any problem at all.

...wife and I are both gone all day long, 'cept on weekends. I let the lab out at about 6:30 a.m. (newfie is always out) and feed them both at about 7:00. There's generally no one home until I get back between 8 and 9 p.m. They have the run of the place and are happy as can be and don't get into any trouble, unless you count an occasional racoon or possum. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My only problem with the underground fencing is that it will keep your dogs in but it won't keep others out. Our dogs are small, and it would work to keep them home, but if a big neighbor dog came to do them harm, they'd be in trouble. I think a fence is our only option........
