underground water pipes to barn

Do you have gophers in your area. In our area poly pipe started out to be quite popular then the gophers began knawing on the pipes. Don't know why, they just do! The telco and the contractor that lays underground phone cables for them found that certain types of armored phone cable was attacked and ruined by gophers where other types apparently didn't appeal to the gophers. Food for thought.

Is the $ you might initially save enough incentive to put substandard 100 PSI pipe in the ground considering the hassle of having to redo or repair it. If you have expansive soil then avoid the thin stuff like the plague. Even the good stuff should have a little zig zag in it to allow for soil movement.

not to hijack the thread but i would like to do something similar but rather then run the barn water line off the pump/tank i would like to extend the house line to the barn. the reason for this is my well and barn are on opposite ends of the house and i would have to trench a couple hundred feet through areas such as driveway, etc. i was just in the crawlspace and figured out i have 3/4" 160 psi black poly feeding off the pressure tank to the house. once in the house the main lines are 3/4" copper and the feeders (to the faucets) is what looks like 1/2" copper. Go given i have 3/4" copper that leads to the point where i would extend to the barn, does it make sense to step this up to 1" 160 psi black poly or should i keep it consistant with the 3/4"? The run from the house line to the barn would be about 80 feet half of which would be running downhill. seems keeping it the same would yield the best pressure?

cheers,

You will get the same pressure with the 3/4" poly line, but you will
get a more significant pressure DROP at the barn, depending on what
flow rate you are asking it to deliver.

Personally, I only use the low pressure poly lines for surface siphons to
my creek. Leaks are common and critters seem to like them, as someone
mentioned previously. The 1" sch40 PVC is rated at 450psi and is
quite cheap. It must be buried (code says 12"). It is quite easy to glue up
and the threaded adapters to connect to copper are very reliable.

Run larger than you need to compensate for pressure drop.
