Underpowered 3130 back from dealer....

If you'd like I'll post some pictures of the grass hills I pull the trailer up with no problem, they're even steeper. It dosen't matter if it's asphalt or grass, if the wheels aren't spinning I'm not losing traction on either. According to your posts your problem isn't losing traction on the slope and spinning you tires but inadequate power causing the engine to die, this should happen on grass or asphalt.

Other than being smooth I've always found a tractor doesn't care what the surface is unless really soft. That is quite a pitch, our 50 hp tractor would be down to 2nd gear high range (4 speed x 2 range, 2-hi is good to maybe 5 mph) on it with no load and would be in first with any load.

Here's a picture I took in the spring of a pasture I reguarly go around in. In fact as soon as the weather breaks and it dries up some I've got to go cut up a tree that fell on the fence in the distance and load up the wood and haul it home. I don't expect any problems.

Why don't you at least give a try at unloading the tires and seeing if that will help.

Thanks, we learned a good while ago that happy livestock are a lot less likely to test the fences. I really wish Ramon would try unloading the tires, I'd like to see if his problem is that he's reached the limit of the weight the l3130 can pull. RaT, I believe it was you that also had the loader and Hoe and was also seeing this problem on inclines, or was it someone else? If you unload those tires let us know if it helps.

On a lighter note, I grow muscadines and what I'd really like to see one day is a trailer load of grapes as big as these huge ones we grew last year. I wouldn't mind my engine stalling from a load like that.

OK Ed, once again, WoW. Either your a snap at editing pictures with Photoshop or your thumb is very green. Are those the muscadines?

I did load my tires on my L3830 and found no real advantage other then it was not as "nimble". I lost 100olbs and I feel good.

I have to ask, are you in denial? You have not mentioned that your L3130 is underpowered and yet you seem perfectly happy? Seriously though, I think when you add a loader, hoe, ballasted tires, Curtis cab, 4200' of thinner then sea level air and whatever else, your probably getting everything the L3130's powerplant has to offer.

I'd would like to see more pictures of your place and product, they are exceptionally good.

4200' Elevation could have a bearing on this. You lose about 1" of manifold pressure for every 1000' of altitude above mean sea level. So instead of approximately 30" Hg, manifold pressure, you're getting around 26". This has a direct relationship with how much power the engine puts out.

Without dragging out the formulas, I'd say at full throttle you're getting no more than 86% of your engine's rated power. And you would get that much only if fuel/air mixture ratio had been optimized for that altitude. How they tune a diesel for high altitude operation, I'm not sure but I'd suspect it would have something to do with the injectors. A fuel/air mixture ratio appropriate to sea level operation would be fuel rich at 4200 ft. and could cause smoking.

This probably isn't the single cause of the problem, but it's a contributor. I think Ramon could probably sell the tractor to a lowlander with both a good explanation of why he's selling and a clear conscience /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.
