Geez. Didn't they take care of that thing? You deserve some kind of award for rescuing it. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

How does the UNIMOG compare to the HUMVEE.

It has hummers for lunch.... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Really, they have quite different purposes. Similarities do exist, such as the troop carriers, the 4 wheel drive capabilities, etc.

The main difference is the "tractor-basis" of the mog. It has many more multi-purpose functions than a humvee.

Have a good one,
Neil.

I've never driven a Unimog, but I have driven hundred of Hummers. I had a job driving them out of the hummer factories in Mishawaka, IN(the main plant) and the retrofit plant in South Bend, IN. We got to play on the off road track a few times. Very amazing vehicles. We drove them out of the plants and to several small towns around Northern Indiana to railroad spurs. On the highway, they'd go about 62MPH. Sometimes we'd tow another hummer behind us and they still went 62MPH. Sometimes one of the driveshafts would fall off. We'd still go 62MPH. At the railyard, we used them to push and pull railcars. While that sounds powerful, we could also push and pull railcars with a few humans(wheels on level tracks roll easily). The problem with hummers is they are so darn huge compared to a Jeep. The only problem I can see with a Unimog is they are even huger' than a hummer. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

But from everything I've read and the movies I've viewed, I would choose a Unimog over a Hummer in a heart beat. Bigger truck, more capacity, better ground clearance, more attachments, 3pt hitches, hydraulics ugh ugh ugh ooo ooo!!! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Well time for an update! spent about 10 hrs. working on the Unimog the past two days. Got the frame all sandblasted and hope to paint it tomorrow evening. Boy was it rusty. I'm glad I'm going through all of this trouble to do it right the first time. This way there will be no surprises later on.
This photo shows the frame after being blasted. Only used a few bags of "Black Shot" which is a nickle slag.

That's a photo of it after blasting? Looks like it has Grey paint on it. Is that how metal always looks after blasting?

In any case, it is dramatic difference from the before shot.
