Walla Walla Washington, the town so nice, they named it twice.

:) In the same vein... Wagga Wagga, NSW. There's even a country song called, "Don't Call Wagga Wagga 'Wagga'!"

I swear that all of these local aboriginal language names all mean 'Meeting Place'.

I seem to recall a place close to Kitchener, Ontario called Punky Doodle Corner? Supposedly named for a German speaking bloke who always sang the words to a song wrong.

Not sure there's anywhere on the planet with better town names than central and western Canada. Moosejaw and Tuktoyaktuk are two of my favorites.

****,MI and Climax,MI

The remains of Harvey rolled through yesterday with quite a bit of heavy rain and some softball sized hale in some areas. Thankfully not ours. I was watching the squall line go through on radar and I went to a different radar that provide more detail when I noticed there is a township called Climax here in NC.

Had to look it up. :D

Wikipedia says it is named Climax because they are the high point on a railroad line. However, JP Morgan had a large quail hunting preserve there so I wonder if that is where the name is from since his company that owned different quail land was named Climax. Climax also had a Cricket field which is odd. There is a Cricket league that plays in Climax so it sounds like a big deal. Have to wonder if the Cricket is related to people hunting on JP Morgans quail land...

Later,
Dan

I live in a village called Odeceixe in Portugal.
A google search turns up only 1 such place; there is no Odeceixe Ohio or Wisconsin.

Even the locals dispute how to pronounce it!

The county seat and shopping town is Aljezur, also a unique name as far as I know.

I forgot to mention that North, South Carolina is southeast of Due West, South Carolina.

Steve

Never heard of Due West, SC. That's pretty neat.

A story about Denmark, SC. An older girl in my church dated and then married a guy who had hunting land near Denmark, and they always talked about going to Denmark, so I knew about the town. In my college major, the Master's program is only a year, and most that go through it basically treat it as their 5th year of college, and I did the same thing. First day of class I go into a class with a girl I knew from undergrad. There's a girl in there that we don't know who graduated from another college. The girl I already knew asked her where she was from and she said Denmark, to which the reply was an emphatic "OH WOW!" (she thought the girl was talking about the country). I leaned over and told her "She's talking about Denmark South Carolina" and basically all she could say was "Oh, I didn't know there was such a place."
