...United Way is not a bad organization and they are very good at generating donations that might otherwise never happen. However, they are primarily a clearinghouse, passing the donations on to other organizations. If you know of a good organization, it's better to donate directly to them. ...
The CEO of the United Way makes over $1.2MM per year in base pay...

You would think that charities of such standing could find retired executive philanthropists to manage the organizations gratis...

My only experience with the United Way was not a good one..

My father paid in to them every paycheck for 40 years, I got hurt and my father had a hospital bed on order, the UW at that time had hospital beds and things of the sort to fill in the gap if someone needed one in the local town halls, he asked, they said sure, it will be $50 a day. My father told them to take a hike and immediately halted donations to them..

I trust none of them period...

I gave to United Way for 31 years at work. Yes, we had the choice whether to give or not but annual employee evaluations by management were not favorable if you did not give. Legally they could not give an unfavorable evalutaion if you didn't give but they always mentioned the fact you did give during the evaluation. I still donate to various tax deductible charities just not to UW anymore. I gave them enough.

United Way got on my **** list when they told me how much I must donate about 50 years ago. The president (?) of the local chapter was the CEO of the company for which I was working then. I prefer to donate to more efficient organizations.

I like to see what administration makes before handing over any money.

So they hand me a list of things I can buy for local children's school supply's. I go inside thinking I'll grab some pens, pads etc.

I thought, why are these people making children they can't afford to support. I don't mind buying some actual school supplies but I'm not going to cloth and feed them, good Lord..

My parents had six kids, never asked for anything, my father worked his tale off for us.. These people might learn something watching a **** bird with a nest full of eggs..

I though the same thing when mt wife's nephew marched off to some far away African village to teack them how to grow plants for food. I though WTH, this Americore things has been teaching Africans to to grow plants for food sinc ethe 60's. Seriously people if they don't know how to grow food by now - NOTHING WILL HELP.

Secondly why are all the African villages in the middle of nowhere with no water. Put these people on trucks / busses and move them CLOSER to the water supply. IS IT ME?

Why do we keep throwing BILLIONS of dollars at the same problems? There is no need for these people to be in far away villages with no food and water while we spend MILLIONS feeding them. Get on a BUS, helicopter, bush planet and come CLOSER. This isnt rocket science.

We Americans do this all over the world - WHY. We can solve the problem by moving these people.

And yes why keep havibng a dozen kids when you have no food and water for yourself? Hellllloooooo people wake up, keep your legs crossed.

Because the people that run such programs profit from them, which to me, makes me question the term "Non Profit". Like Welfare Agencies. The more people, under their control and care, the bigger the administration.

They are trying to move closer to water and supplies, but we won't allow them through our borders. Your last question doesn't make sense. Everybody knows that the storks bring babies, it doesn't what people do for recreation.

20 years ago times were pretty bad for us and I took a job doing construction on the road. 4 kids at home, a couple of cats, my wife and a dog. They all looked at me for everything. It took my per diem money, motel money and my salary to just get by.

You did what it takes and you are to be commended for that. So many won't do that.

I knew a union plumber who had a wife and kids. Times were tough, construction was down, there was no work for union plumbers who had to sit by and watch the hole they were in get deeper by the day.

One of those union plumbers took a job pumping gas at a filling station, and a second job at a small engine repair shop. He was making about 1/10th scale of a union plumber, but he was getting his family by until times improved. His next door neighbor was an executive that was also out of work. He had received a number of job offers, and turned them all down. He explained: "the jobs offered were beneath him."

Guess who I admire?
