Unsafe towing... Heavy tractor on broken "7k" landscape trailer

I have hauled a lot of tractors on a lot of trailers and most any car trailer will not hold up to sustained hauling of a good sized tractor. Just because its rated at 7000 doesn't mean anything, the typical car weighs what ? 3500 max. That trailer is designed for lawnmowers, nothing more. I run a farm and we haul larger tractors all the time, without trailer brakes half the time but with heavy trailers and heavier tow vehicles. The other variable no one asked is how far and what kind of roads, on the interstate this is a fatality. Secondary country roads low speeds, still not good but maybe a little more controlable. I hauls 5 tons of hay with a F350 all the time with no brakes and no tounge weight but never fast. Not saying its OK just that the safety can be controlled by means other than ideal tow vehicle and or trailer.

Why did you trade your big Kubota for a tiny JD 755? There is a bit of $$ difference i think!
Per the Deere dealer, the Kubota was worth $1000 more than the Deere in tradein ($1500-2000 IMO, but a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush).
They traded straight across for the tractors and the guy bought the bushhog for $350.
The Kubota was way too big for what Dad wanted to do and pretty much got in its own way.
The Deere is very nimble and should handle everything Dad wants to do.

So he lost 1K on the deal, still dont sound to good? Am i thinking right on this one? That JD was worth more than 2K i would put it closer to 4K around here would be my guess?

Sorry, my 1500-2000 was supposed to be that much more, not total price.
With the backhoe, the Deere would run $9-10k around here on CL. The backhoe by itself is worth about $3500.
Tractors like the Kubota run in the $9-12k price range on CL depending on year, hours and options

The local Deere dealer said that the L3650 was worth about 8k on tradein (largely because it had a Laurin cab) and they said that the 755 was worth about 7k on tradein.

My father in law sold his Case 450C bulldozer over the internet. The guy showed up with a 10K trailer pulled by a 3/4 ton pickup. He was from 4 hours away. Didn't know how to operate the dozer to even get it on the trailer. Scared my fil just to run the dozer up on the trailer, he put jacks on the back of the trailer to load it and the buyer thought that was overkill!!!!!

>snip< Sad thing is i just recently completed the tongue box up front and rear swing loading jacks. I also just added the spare tire and electric front jack. Man, i hate it when i finally get around to completing a project only to have to sell it.>snip<

The guy absolutely has his head in the sand! He's an accident waiting to happen. I only hope that he doesn't kill some innocent family while trying to chalk up his "bragging rights".

I also had a trailer similar to that one, but in better shape, when I bought my Kubota L3400. I 'figured' that I'd just haul it around with my little C1500 Silverado pickup. Ha! Even the little L3400 just pushed that little truck all over the place. No problem on power, but STOPPING (with no trailer brakes at all) was an experience on it's own.

After the first trial haul run around the block, I got rid of that little 16' light duty trailer quick, and bought a nice 20' PJ traler with all the bells and whistles that I could afford. BTW, I love that PJ - built to 12K specs and registered for 10K for my little L3400. I also bought a old 3/4 ton C2500 diesel with electric brake controller, etc. to haul it. Now I feel safe, and more importantly, I don't expect to be killing off a bunch of people while moving the tractor from one place to another.

I sure like your tool box though! Wish I had one just like it. Nice work.

reminds me of one time a long while back I went with a guy to get a tractor.. he had a ranger pickup and a single axle trailer... that thing was a teeter totter the whole way to his place. no trailer brakes.. and lots of tail wagging the dog.. not a fun experience.

Sounds as if he needed you to go along as cab weight so he could haul it

I take towing and hauling very seriously, If i have to have 2 straps,,i put 3 ,,if i only need 4 chains,,,ill put as many that are needed to make sure that what ever i have on that trailer,,becomes part of that trailer--if it rolls---it will not move,,if it is hit from in back,,,you guessed,,it wont move. I find GN trailers the best for reliability and safety how ever those that have been built out of camp trailer frames and a GN hitch welded on are very risky to others and by that i mean,,TO OTHERS.

Back in my earlier days I let a rental place load a mini excavator on their own trailer after it was connected to my 97 Tahoe,,hydrolice trailer brakes, twist type ball hitch and before i got 1/2 mile away at 45-50mph it started to sway at the tail end and it took nearly 3/4 mile to get it under control and out of the oncoming lane at one pint---do not hit brakes---,,,as it swung from side to side i applied brakes at the mid point of when the trailer was swinging and in line with the Tahoe,,when in a straight line or coming to a straight in line i would apply brakes and let off and as it swung the other way i would apply brakes again at the in line moment and got it down to 30-35mph and pulled it over at the next clear area,,,started that ex up and pulled it forward about 1 1/2 feet, chained it back down and had no problems from there to home.

Every driver is resposible for their own loads,,,this means if you are driving and the load on the vehicle goes wrong or get pulled over for what ever reason,,,the driver,,,,,you,,,,is resposible no matter whom loaded it or secured it.....plain and simple,,,

Happy holidays to all and please be safe out there,,, a lot of ice and not that many tow trucks:thumbsup:

I think the owner of the trailer and Suburban must either work for the post office, or watch TOO MANY television commercials.

How many times have you hear the post office say.... if it fits, it ships!!

I saw the cops picking up the pieces of a flipped postal delivery truck in the ditch earlier this week.

Anyway, I didn't read all the posts on this thread; but that idiot towing the tractor home shouldn't be allowed to drive anything period. It looks like that trailer would fishtail all the way home the way it was loaded. Loved the single safety chain with the choker loop. Wiring that looked like something from the third world.

I'm no towing expert; but good grief that's plain nuts.
