Unsafe towing... Heavy tractor on broken "7k" landscape trailer

my trailers have the tongue weight added to the axle weight for their gvw.why does it not make sense? if you weigh my trailers at max gvw they are legal if the truck they are hitched to is big enough.my f450 can carry a 2000 lb bumper load.

Well ive never seen a 3500# weighted trailer with 2 axles myself. I thought the tandems started at 7,000 and went up from there. On my 7,000 trailer the main frame from the hitch also goes thru to front axle.... but hard to see in picture. It goes thru the frony frame rtail and continues to axle. can only tell on underside

down here I have seen car haulers made with 2 3500# axles, but derated to 6k.

have also seen light duty landscape trailers that are tandem axle.. but only rated for 5500# and with thin decking or expanded metal.. the axles themselves might be ok.. but the rest of the frames can be 2" angle iron :(

That sounds like this trailer. The tongue was 3x3 angle, but the rest was 2x2 angle. He said that he got it in FL when he was moving as it was cheaper to guy the trailer than renting a uhual to NY would have been.

yep.. scarry.. that's a landscape trailer. I see them here.. 3" metal on the tounge, 2" angle iron the rest of it including the deck supports, and most all of them have that rial up there for stiffeners. that sort of trailer.. while it may have 2 3500# axles.. for sure is not meant to haul a tractor. I've seent hat same setup rated at 5k to make it legal for no e-brakes, and have a flat 4 wire plug on it.. also makes it legal for the smaller tow vehicles with a 5k tow rating on their bumper..etc...

no way I'd haul a full size tractor on it.

a SCUT.. probably..

?? never heard that they add tongue weight rating to trailer GW rating.

Some companies do. Its really pushing the envelope but its done. Its done lots on 5th wheels and GN trailers.

That makes no sense at all. The trailer tongue weight is a proportion of the GVW (like 1/6 th of the total weight) as it relates to the total weight. In other words a 7,000# GVW may have a 1000# weight at the hitch cause of the way the weight is distributed to the tongue, but it doesn't add to the GVW. The GVW is on the sticker plastered on the trailer. Thats the TOTAL ALLOWED WEIGHT including trailer and load. All a weight distributing hitch does is allow more weight to be distributed back to the axles off of the ball.

Yes it does. If the load can be transferred to the tow vehicle its now on its GVWR.

So as long as the trucks GVWR is in check, the trailers GVWR is in check, and the the max GCWR is in check for the rig its all legal.

So,the guy came by yesterday to trade his Deere 755 for Dad's L3650. He lives ~1.5 hours away and in my opinion, shouldn't be allowed to own anything larger than a riding mower. See the pictures below of his "7000# trailer" with the L3650 (has Laurin FOPS cab, 4 loaded tires, loader) and bush hog on it.
I pointed out the broken welds and such, but he didn't seem to care. I was close to calling the police and letting them know of an unsafe load heading out, but he left and I didn't want him to get pulled over too close to the house, so he couldn't drive the tractor back.

Enjoy:

Why did you trade your big Kubota for a tiny JD 755? There is a bit of $$ difference i think!

Most light trailers come with 205 tires that have a load limit of 1720#. That limits the total load to 6880# on 7000# combined axles.

You can be busted for over capacity on tires also!

and then there's the whole 'P' vs 'T' tires.. IE.. passanger vehicle tires / trailer..e tc.

I think you are wrong on 205 tires. Load range C (6 ply) ST trailer tires, which are the most common 205 load range, have a rating of 1,760#. This gives you a load rating of 7,040# if aired up to the max rating for a load range C tire of 50 psi.

You are right though, you can be overweight on the tires and not on the axles or trailer itself.
