I keep the gate locked at all times, unless I am expecting guests. But tire tracks, or lack there of are easy to read. They know when I'm there though because I shoot a lot, are suppressors in my future?

We've had this property for 9 years now and we've put in a great deal of work to clean it up and make it livable so we have kept a very low profile. Maybe it's time to be introduced to the neighbors, who are not many.

It could be locals that have lived there in the past and know what's there, or even hunters that happen upon my workshop which is 200 yards from the entrance. They didn't break the lock to open it, they just lifted what was outside of it and used my trailer to haul it all off. Again, once I get there I'll know exactly what's missing....the sheriff already has the serial number.

I wish there were a way to look around for the missing trailer. I wonder if it is in plain sight at a neighbor's house.

forgeblast, I realize the vulnerabilities of living in the country. I've taken many moonlit walks, for various reasons :), and I know there's no practical way to stop a determined group of criminals without applying extreme physical force but I feel that if I make it difficult enough they'll go to easier pickings. It was my fault for not having the trailer locked, I got complaisant and that won't happen again.

U have the right mindset.....the spikes are good, use the cameras at that point....then use another walking defense at the structures with cameras there hidden... and your assailant will be caught...

I would be doing daily searches on Craigslist for your area (and surrounding areas). You may be surprised to find someone selling a trailer cheap.

Here's a remote sensor that may work for me, with a bit of a mod it can probably trigger an audio alarm, flashing light, and a bazooka :)

The most important thing on the list! :D

Do a web search for oilfield entrance gates, that should give some ideas. I can take pics of ours this weekend and post up. Its a basic simple cattleguard setup with a 1 pipe bar setup with lock "pool" that has several locks on it. Pics will explain better. You can throw grade 80 and grade 100 chain on it, but then its just as simple to cut the 16 gauge pipe gate, and bypass the chain.

Hello,
Sorry to hear of the break-in !!!! I see that you secure your gate with a chain.....not a good idea. When I installed my gate I used an I-beam as the post that it is hinged off of. Then I welded a 1/4" steel plate (between the top 2 rails) on the side that closes. You need to have the post that it closes against directly behind that 1/4 plate. I cut a suare hole in the plate so that when the gate closes up against the pole, the square piece of steel that I welded to the pole goes through the square hole. This piece has a hole drilled in it to accept one of those disc (round) type locks. Also around where the lock is attached I welded a square box (3"deep) a little bit bigger than the lock and big enough that you can attach the lock easily. This way no one can get to your lock with bolt cutters. Also from the picture I couldn't tell what the land looked like on either side of the gate, but it's a good idea to have some big rocks placed on either side of the gate so no one can drive around it !!!! Hopes this gives you some ideas !!!!!

You guys are champs, more great ideas but pictures speak louder than 1K words, please!

Here's what I had in mind, only for the lock side which I will design so as bolt cutters can't get to the lock.

No room for someone to drive on either side of the gate because there are trees on the left and one heck of a drop-off on the right. Only way in will be through the gate and that’ll be pretty beefed up this time. In addition motion sensors, lights, and cameras will complete my bag of tricks.

GCP, that gate looks good except for one aspect. The posts also need diagonal braces that lie parallel to the road to provide some resistance should the perps simply drive into your gate and push it down.

If they are driving a stolen truck, which is not uncommon, they won't care what damage is done to the brush-guard on the truck.

OP, what happens if the fire dept. or law enforcement need access when you're not in town?

go to gun store and get some paper targets. Punch some holes near the center. Leave targets near gate.
