My Aunt would toss the ashes in the chicken coop. Never knew why, but them chickens would scratch the heck out of the ash.

Thats where ours go ... they dust themselves and I'm told it helps control mites on the chickens.

Yep, I dump the wood ash out in the yard in a low spot and our free range chickens hit it once a week scratching holes, laying down and flipping the ash over them.

My dad usedto put some in the outhouse at the cottage. Was suppose to keep the smell down. I don't know if it worked but thats where some went, the rest was the forest floor.

I have used wood ash when scraping hogs and have used it in a paste to remove hair from deer hides.

To make soap, you run water through hardwood ashes and then add to fat.

The ashes from our wood stove go into the garden.
