Ignorance is sometimes embarrasing, but I think I favor that over stupidity.

Draw bar:

Not that I need one, I don't know, but I've been seeing them around and I don't know what they are used for. So, let me have it. You can pound on me if you like, just slip the answer in there somewhere.

normally used for trailers, and any non three point apparatus (towed). Also allows offsetting of the towed implement. On older tractors there was a solid link to the third point to make it ridgid (no up or down)

I guess it's apparent, I'm not a farmer. Wouldn't mind it tho.

They are actually a thing of the past on most of today's tractor since they come with a fixed draw bar off the rear tranny.

One word of caution is when pulling from a 3 point draw bar is keep it low. Allowing to raise up over the axle line can easily get a tractor over on its back. Guy just 1/2 mile from me got killed on a Ford 961 trying to pull out a culvert drain when it went over backwards and killed him.

Sometimes "drawbar" can mean different things. Refer to the PDF file attached.

The "swinging drawbar" is for attaching discs, trailers, spreaders, other ground engaging equipment, etc. directly to the tractor's frame.

The "drawbar", a bar with holes and a pin on each end, is attached between the lower arms of the 3 point hitch and is used to pull reasonably light duty equipment but requires a "clevis-style" hitch to be attached. It is especially useful if raising or lowering the drawbar will have a desired effect on what it is attached to.

Thanks for all the info, especially the safety advise. Doggone shame about the fellow involved in the flipover.

Don't think I need one, was just curious.

I use my drawbar to tow my flatbed and travel trailers around the yard. Tractors having a tighter turning radius than most trucks allow you to make easier manuvers. The drawbar and trailer tow ball just by themselves will roll on the drawbar's two pins if not 3-pt secured in some fashion. I use a piece of 1/4" angle iron that bolts into a drawbar hole and one of the bottom link's holes. I leave the bolts a little loose so I have plenty of up/down motion to duck the travel trailer into the garage.

I am fairly new here but have found all on this site to be helpful to the max. There may be a difference of opinion from time to time but then even more to learn as a result.
