Used B7100\'s

Hi Folks,

I recently joined this forum, and have gotten tons of information from reading the posts. I am currently looking for a tractor. I am certain a BX would do the trick for me, but my budget is about half of what it would take to get one.

So, I went used-tractor shopping this weekend, and could use some advice on a couple of the tractors I saw. At one of the dealers, I found two B7100HST, both in fair condition. They are both 4WD, hydrostatic, with a 60" MMM and turf tires. They both had some rust, and some minor dings in the fenders. The dealer did not have the service history or manuals for either. They both ran OK. The hours meter appeared to be functional on both.

Tractor 1 Specifics:

2785 Hours
Manufactured: 1984
SN: 52197
Price: $4,800

Tractor 2 Specifics:

530 Hours
Manufactured: 1981
SN: 11743
Price: $6,200

I would say that Tractor 2 appeared in slightly better condition that tractor 1, and seemed to run a little better.

I'm seriously considering tractor 2. I plan to keep it for 2 years, until I can save enough for a BX with FEL. Can you tell me if $6,200 is a fair price? If you were faced with this decision, which one would you buy?

Thanks for the help,

Re: Used B7100\'s

Well Chris, if it had a FEL, I'd probably grab no 2 in a heartbeat. Just can't see having a tractor and no loader. I don't mow the lawn, I turn it into a large hole. (maybe that's why my wife had me move out. Hmmmm)

Keep the greasy side down.

Re: Used B7100\'s

Be a bit cautious with the hour meter. I bought a B9200 with 420 hours on it and when I took it to the dealer he told me that was the third meter that had been put in it. The hydrostat was shot and I needed nearly $5000 in repairs. I got stung badly relying on the hour meter and the "word" of the owner.

Best of luck,
Kevin

For the amount that dealer is asking he should be willing to give some kind of warranty. 30 to 90 days? A 1981 with only 580 hour seems real low. What kind of shape is the mower? Is the mower a Kubota or some other manufacture? I believe the 1981 is the older style front axle. The newer design came out in 1984 to 1985. The newer ones are all cast iron. Similar to what is seen on current models.
If you keep it 2 years you should be able to get most of what you paid back.

Re: Used B7100\'s

Seems just a little bit pricey to me. Two and a half years ago I bought a 1995 B7100HST with the 60" mower deck for just under $8,000 from a private party. It had less than 300 hrs. There are good values out there, if you can be patient enough to search them out. If time is of the essence, I'd look seriously at #2.

Re: Used B7100\'s

I agree, seems pricey to me also. Three years ago I bought a new B7300 with a 60" MMM for $10,000 even.

Re: Used B7100\'s

Ron,

The MMM is a Kubota. It seems in OK shape. (At least the top does). I must admit that I did not look underneath it.

Should I be looking for anything in particular when examining the MMM?

Re: Used B7100\'s

you need to ask the dealer for his best deal. these prices seem high. have you been looking in the paper? make shure that you have a qualified tech look at any used equipment before you buy. good luck

Kubota MMM are tough. Check the PTO shaft and gearbox. I had to replace the bearing on the blade under the gearbox. It was not getting any grease. Also check the caster wheels on front corners of deck. If they show a lot of wear then they were not lubricated properly or have more hours on it then indicated.

Re: Used B7100\'s

chris: nobody can tell u which used tractor to buy. u are the one looking at it. sometimes u have to go by what u think of the owner(if private)or the dealer. there are a lot of very nice used machines out there, but u must be patient. check around with your hands for seal and gasket leaks. get on it and use it, check all functions. don't buy hastily.
