found a used 7' woods rotary cutter. Haven't seen it yet, but I'm told there is a small rust hole at the back where debris was left on top to rot. other than that is said to be in good condition. Is $1000 a reasonable price?

I like to pay no more than half of new price for used implements.

if it's an especialy mint implement that perhaps was bought and not used, used once.. or a leftover from another season.. I might go 80%.

If the price was right a small rust hole I could weld up in a deck wouldn't keep me from buying the hog.

search yer local for sale market and decide where that price lies base don the equipments condition and brand. ( 7' cutters fall in a weird area.. most are single spindle and single tail wheel, and actually take more hp to spin up than a dual spindle machine with perhaps 2 tail wheels.... still.. if you got the hp... etc.. )

Thanks soundguy. I was hoping you would see this as you have a lot of knowledge on the bigger stuff. I would think this would be about 3k new as it is the heavey duty model. My M5700 should have enough power?

It sounds a little high to me :( $500 ) sounds better if it need a little TLC, and as long as your handy with the welder

57hp. I prefer to go slow when doing bush hogging. So I like to be on the large size for the cutter.

Price sounds hight to me as well, Your tractor will handle a 7' hog with no problem, I run a 6' with a 45hp L4200 and it does just fine.

When a seller says there is a small rust hole in it I'd suspect it's a pile of junk. Now my experiences have turned me to that conclusin but others may have had better luck.

Price seems high to me as well. I picked up a used IM500 for $50 bucks. I haven't done a thing to it and it has mowed a lot of Sugar Maple saplings! Looks like (&*^&^ but does the Job!

Meh. I prefer a smaller device as I work in and around a lot of trees. A 7 footer would jack me up pronto. It's also hard to sell such a big thing should you have to. Anyway, I agree that a rust hole means it has been sitting in the weather for a long long time.
As you probably already know, the working parts of a rotary cutter are usually in fine order. It's the deck and blades that go. If you go look at this monster, be sure to get a good look underneath at the pan, the blades and the hardware. If you find that you have to put new blades on it and you need to demolish the nuts and bolts to do that, your bargain cutter just became no bargain. Another thing to consider is whether your loader raises high enough to pick it up for maintenance.

It's also hard to sell such a big thing should you have to. .

kind of a non issue... big mowers are for big jobs... 7' seems small compaired to my 10' or 15' mower. those who want big.. buy big if they can.

Another thing to consider is whether your loader raises high enough to pick it up for maintenance.

even if you just have to flip it up against a tree.. just about any tractor / loader should do that.. shouldn't be a need to completely lift the thing off the ground.

Not worried about raising it high enough to work on. I will have hydraulic top link. The M5700, L3300 and ford 4500 all have FEL's also. Looks like I'm in the wrong area to buy farm stuff. Around here used stuff brings prices close to new. I don't even waste time going to auctions due to high prices. Anyhow the seller is a trusted family member he bought it from Disney World. Another family member worked there and remembered it, said it was used for heavy cutting that there other cutters was not rated for. He said it would cut at least 3" trees. They spare no expense in maintaining equipment so I doubt much is needed. I would think this sold for 3k or more new. The small rust hole is on top rear of deck where debris was not cleaned off. I bought it and should be getting in a week are so.

check the hole.. it might have been a drilled hole to allow water to drain from the deck... and then just enlarged from rust.
