I have found a used JD 9 shank chisel plow in my area for $400.00. I would guess it at being built in the 70's, heavy duty, height adjustment crank works, it has springs on top of the shanks & the tires are even ok. Is it worth 400.00? And if I pull 4 of the shanks off, think my 55hp tractor with MFWD would have trouble pulling it? I only have ten acres or so to chisel. Figure I can always get 400 just for the scrap. I have pics but don't know how to get them on the forum from my phone. Thanks for the help!

Your not gonna pull it very deep

Yes, it is definitely worth $400. I'm not sure why your tractor wouldn't pull it in 4wd if you've got plenty of ballast. And, as you said, you can always remove a few shanks to give your tractor an advantage.

How deep are you planning on pulling it through the soil? I think it will be barking to pull it. With a 35hp 1020 JD and a box scraper with 5 shanks I can make it bark pretty hard. It depends on the width of the chisel and the depth - I think you have a chance...any picture?

I think it's cheap. And a John Deere. Worth it all day long.

You could always reduce it to three!?

I have a 7 shank Athens chisel that I pull with a 75hp 4wd with loaded rears. In ground that is tilled every year, I have no problem at all. If I am pulling it in pasture ground that has not been tilled in years, I have to feather the lift sometimes. I think you will see similar results with your 55hp pulling 4-5 shanks. By your description, the plow would be a good buy at $400.

http://archive.lib.msu.edu/DMC/Ag.%20Ext.%202007-Chelsie/PDF/e1152.pdf estimates 8.6 drawbar HP per foot of width. It looks like kf4uda is on the money.

Thanks everyone. That's what I was looking for. I do have ballasted rears & weights so I think it will work fine when I find the sweet spot on number of shanks and the right depth. I have a really heavy 8' tandem disc & when it grunts I just engage the 4wd. I know it won't pull all nine shanks, the guy has a 4020 that he used it with. Love my 5205 but it sure isn't a 4020. Thanks again, Happy New Year! Be safe.
