Used oil disposal ideas on ways of uses?

I always take mine to Advance Auto Parts and had quite a bit too. About 12-16 gallons in separate 1 gallon jugs. They didn't flinch either. It's just a lot easier taking it all at once than taking a few gallons here and there...

I'm accumulating a bunch probaly got 2 - 55 gal drums or more now. I have several operations i do at the house and usualy generate at least 5-10 gal a weekend and it keeps adding up

i'd like to make a oil burner or something as i also have some methanol fuel also which we generate some excess due to contamination and water getting in it.

I have a bunch of alum. pipe and some crap steel any way of making a concrete or someother type structure to make an oil stove w/o the heavy iron? no luck on old stove or waterheaters yet..

5-10 gallons a weekend sounds like commercial use to me as well.

I've used waste oil, along with wood preservative and diesel to dip fence posts. I figured it would save on diesel and if it was as bad as everybody said, it would be good for the fence posts.

For small quantities, I slop it onto the brush pile before setting it on fire.

Mother Earth News once had a set of plans for a home made waste oil burning stove. IIRC, it used a couple of cheap steel skillets for a burner. Perhaps your library can track down a back issue.

Starting in Oct. 2002, there was an extensive thread on this forum about waste oil heaters that lasted pretty much all winter. Lots of info and pictures.

I've been wondering the same thing. Normally all I have is what I drain out of the tractor during oil changes. Would it be a really dumb idea to simply use a metal container to drain it into and then just touch it off with a match and let it burn (assuming it would burn)? Would the resulting smoke cause any serious air pollution problems?

Tks,
Bob

my experiments indicate it won't burn since if it did inside the engine could catch on fire if it was possible i usualy mix alky or gas/diesel to thin it then it will ignite or add a small amount of oil to a thinning agent then it will ignite.

hydro fluid seems to realy burn fast and easy so it might be capable of igniting it off just by flames..

the enviromental effect would be large amounts of unburned hydrocarbon's and probaly a bunch of other products but when no one takes it what else you gonna do with it? and epa agrees as far as i know that's about the only on-site effort you can legaly do with oil is burn it for heat..

Oil will burn.. it just doesn't jump on fire like gas or diesal.. it burns easier if you have a "wick".. like for oil lanterns. When we we're kids.. my dad use to take a firewood size piece of log.. drill large holes in a row along one side of the log.. fill them w/ oil to burn.. we used them on overnight fishing trips when we camped out.. burned for hours.. and probably helped keep the bugs away. (Be safe though.. put a brick on either side so it doesn't roll.) He also used his old oil to mop his ground contact implements when putting them away for the season.

So you've gotten oil to start straight out by using a wick? i'll have to try that all you need is to get the oil to a point of vaporization to get the crude oil to ignite eather by thinning or heating i did one time take alky under oil and heat the oil to it started vaporizing and then ignited it.

I could see draining the oil into a metal container, adding a little diesel from the pump, and then letting it burn.. while standing over it and rubbing my hands together to show I'm using it for heat. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Hmm. Nothing is ever easy, is it?

Thanks,
Bob
