Used oil

I recently did the major fluid changes on tractor and RTV. I went to county s
disposal and told him I had about 8 gallons of used hydraulic fluid. He told me to dump it in with the motor oil? So I did.

stories about old timers painting their barns with used oil, my buddies got 1 his grand dad painted with oil. 100 yeas old and still in good shape.

I only say that because it's what I was told when I dropped my old oil off where they have a waste oil furnace.
I remember when my father used to drain it onto the gravel driveway to keep the dust down... I wouldn't dream of doing that now.

I know of a house built in the 1930's that had used oil painted on the cedar roof shingles that lasted over 70 years with the original roof remaining in good condition until it was torn down for redevelopment. I used to pour mine around fence posts to keep them from rotting. Wouldn't think of doing either of those things now.

I can remember when the county would spray used oil on the dirt roads in summer months to keep the dust down. That ended sometime in the 70s with the creation of the EPA. I put mine in 30 gallon barrels and take it to one of the local oil change places when I get around to it.

In Nevada it was the same on dirt roads... really kept the dust in check...

In CONN any place that sells oil needs to take it back. We also have free disposal at recycling center

I put some in sawdust/planer chips and use it to start fires in my wood stoves...

I've mixed quite a bit of it 50/50 with diesel, filtered it, and burned it in my diesels in the summer too...

Bought a new car battery from Walmart yesterday. They had a large sign saying they take used oil. Didn't occur to me to ask if they charged you or not?

In England we have free disposal at our local recycle centers. I know garage workshops have guys that come around and collect the waste, but I was under the impression that it was processed cleaned and re used for lower grades of lubricating oil.

My Kubota dealer takes used oil. Don't know whether that's common.

Used motor oil is a commodity with value. Used oil run through a refinery actually produces a better base oil than straight crude does. That base oil is sold on the open market and goes right back into new products.

When crude is higher the price of base oils follows and companies like Safety Kleen pay the people they pick up from so WalMarts and auto parts chains of the world are getting good money for the used oil you bring them. When the price of crude is lower though then the base oil market follows and the recyclers like Safety Kleen pay very little to nothing for the oil they collect. Some even charge to pick it up.

Regardless, the used motor oil collected is re-refined into a quality product.
