Used v2800 Fransguard

   / Used v2800 Fransguard #13
I "believe" it's a Fransgard V4000. However, it's old (20-25 yrs?) and been repainted. There is one lever that says Fransgard on it and that's all. Looking at the V4000 manual resembles my winch.
My problem is it takes 2 of us to pull the cable out and it doesn't seem to have the power it should.
This was a friend of mines that I borrowed over the last couple of years and he recently decided to buy a new one, seemed like a good idea at the time!

Heavy to pull out?
Can be the drum brake is to tight or the wheel on the which the cable runs don't spin. Is the wire OK?

Yes, the cable is good. It's a 3/8" (plus or minus) steel cable and it jams up sometimes but that does not seem to be the problem.
The lever to start pulling is very stiff to engage/disengage the cable.
However, I just realized I should probably start my own thread instead of taking over this fellows! Ha. I'll do that but thanks for the response and if there's a way to adjust the drum brake (and you could tell me) that would be GREAT!

( I'm glad you posted this because this is the same thing mine is doing also) Can't wait to hear what people have to say

The mechanism that engage the clutch need to be lubricated and clean if it's old and been stored outdoors.
Very simple constructions so tear it down and check it. Clutch plate and bearings might need replacement but parts are usual not expensive.

I can see if I find a parts list, I think this is much like the old Norse and you adjust the clutch by a very large nut which is at the tractor end of the Axel that holds the drum.

The drum brake is designed so that it releases when you pull the wire, often a arm which goes against the wire.
Does it release properly? When PTO is engaged?

The only time I've had a chance to see it work was at the dealers when I bought it . I thought that when I pulled on the rope to engage the winch that the arm didn't move but just a little, and when I stopped pulling the rope the cable still had tension on the cable to pull in . The cable was around a pole when we tried it out and I pulled the tractor back to the pole( but it didn't seem to want to pull it until he took the breaks off and took it out of gear) I thought it should have pulled the tractor backwards with the breaks on ,right?
(The blade was up off the ground)
When I stopped pulling the rope and was going to unhook it from the pole is when I stopped because it seemed that it still wanted to pull in the cable. I had him disengage the pto before I'd remove the cable, so not to get hurt .
