I give up on that one. I'm hoping someone else will get it though. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif )

Well Junkman, it looks like no one else is going to attempt to tackle that one and I already gave up, so let me have it...

Here's the question one more time--
There are 5 states in these United States that have independent "states" outside of their states, but inside of another state. You can walk between these 5 states within 15 minutes and be in all of them. If you commit a crime in any of one of the states and run to another state, you would have to be extradited from that state to be tried in the other state. You might call them "states within a state".

It is a long explanation, so grab a beer and sit back and relax. Many years ago, when Massachusetts decided to start the Eastern States Exposition, they decided that the only way that it could be successful was that if all the New England States were to participate. The only way that the other states would participate is if the State of Massachusetts deeded over to them a small parcel of land that they could erect a building on that would represent their state and would be Sovereign land of that State. Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, Vermont, & New Hampshire each got a small parcel to call their own to create their own little "state house" on. Back in the mid 1970's a politician named Dukakas (a failed presidential candidate) passed a gun law in Massachusetts that prohibited carrying guns by anyone that was not licensed by Massachusetts and that included police of another state. It carried a mandatory 1 year jail sentence. This brought about a major problem, because the buildings on the land at the "Big E" were "technically" not in Massachusetts. It was eventually resolved and that is how I learned about these "miniature" states within the state of Massachusetts. It is claimed that if you commit a crime in one of these "states" that you will be brought back to the "big" part of the state to face trial. Now the interesting part is, how will they remove you since they will have to go through Massachusetts to get to their state. I have heard that in the past that there have been some interesting problems arise from time to time.

This might be a trick question. I'm not going to say who I think it might be. It'll get too many people going.
I'll PM Junkman privately who I think said it.

Next question--
What person had a regular starring role on a regular television series on each of the three major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) during the same year?

The inside of our phone book shows the map with only Eastern through Hawaii.
Those are time zones in the United States.

Maine is Eastern time zone. The zone line is the state line. North and east of Maine (Canada) is in the Atlantic zone.

/ Useless Trivia Tag... #49
The state of Maine arbitrarily moved the time line for convince as many places do. Time lines are straight like longitude and latitude lines, however to make it easy they are moved to accommodate geographical and political areas. Honest, I wouldn't lie about such an important matter. Don't believe me, go ask Henro, keeper of all important knowledge of facts & truths. Besides, who would you rather trust, the site that I show as my reference, the United States Government or the Telephone Company? That is like calling Ghost Busters!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Nope. It wasn't Abe Lincoln. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

"George?"
"Yes, Father."
"Did you cut down my cherry tree?"
"No, Father."
"Well, I’m very disappointed in you, George."
"Why, Father?"
"Because 12 people saw you cut down the cherry tree with your hatchet. Would you like to change your previous answer, George?"
"No, Father. I believe the answer I gave you was legally accurate. In my own mind, I was telling you the truth."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"Well, you asked me if I had ‘cut’ down the tree. In my own mind, it seemed to me that ‘cutting’ is something one does with a knife or a sickle. Since I used my little hatchet, the relationship I had with the tree, while perhaps inappropriate, was not a ‘cutting’ relationship. I would call it a ‘chopping’ relationship..."
"I’ll give you another chance, George. Did you chop down my cherry tree?"
"No, Father."
"Why do you still say no?"
"Because I cannot tell a lie. And in my own mind I did not ‘chop’ down your cherry tree."
"Well what did you do then?"
"I chopped it into two pieces and one fell to the ground."
"So you chopped it down."
"No, I merely chopped it. The force of gravity caused it to fall down. Were it not for the force of gravity, over which I have absolutely no control, the tree, though segmented, would presumably still be up, not down."
"One more chance, George. Did you chop my cherry tree down?"
"No, Father."
"HOW CAN YOU SAY NO?"
"Because of my regard for the truth. What is that object at which I am pointing?"
"It’s the stump of the cherry tree."
"And isn’t the stump part of the tree, Father? In fact, isn’t it the most important part of the tree, since without a stump there would be no tree?"
"I guess so."
"Yet the stump is still standing. So when you asked me if I had chopped down the tree, my own mind said to me, ‘Tell the truth.’ And the truthful answer is no. You chopped, gravity caused part of the tree to fall, yet the most important part of the tree is still standing."
"I see."
"All I can suppose, Father, is that those 12 people whose exaggerated claims allege they saw me ‘cut down’ the entire ‘tree’ were motivated not by a search for truth but by some personal vendetta against me, perhaps because I am from Virginia."
"George, you’re a real..."
"Thank you, Father.

Scroll down a wee bit more (on the zenzibar site) and you'll see a nearly indistinguishable quote attributed to Ben Franklin. It is a good quote and I can see how it could easily be recycled by many prominent thinking men.

Timezones are funny things aren't they /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Up here where Mossroad and I live we suffer with three timezones depending on the time of year. We work in South Bend IN (yes, home to Studebaker wagons and cars). I live across the line in MI and to our west is Chicago. As a result, in the winter we have EST for both South Bend and Michigan and CST for the next county west (Laporte) as they like to associate with Chicago. In the summer most of Indiana stays on EST including South Bend while Michigan goes to EDT and Laporte goes to CDT.

Most of our kids activities are related to school so it's Michigan time but work and many of our social activities are on Indiana time. I tried setting adjacent clocks in the house to the two times but my wife didn't like it a bit /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

We just have to remember to say "Michigan or Indiana time?".

Sorry for the dull sidebar but it's cold and still snowing but not enough for tractor time /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Yep, Rob. The TV shows are on later when it gets dark sooner and on earlier when it gets dark later. We drive to the beach at Warren dunes 30 miles away to watch the sunset in the summer, but the park closes at 9:00 and the sun isn't down yet. Right now it's an hour earlier in Laporte(17 miles to the west, just one county over in the same state) and the same time in Michingan. In a month, LaPorte will be on the same time as us, but it'll an hour later in Michigan 6 miles away. We don't do the spring forward, fall back things with our clocks. I think we are stuck in time /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The only time zone I observe is DFT... Dad's Family Time... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I was thinking of Thomas Jefferson. Someone quoted that after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. I could have sworn they said Thomas Jefferson said that. Maybe I am wrong, though. Wouldn't be the first time. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
