Using Tractors for Cutting/Handling Firewood

   / Using Tractors for Cutting/Handling Firewood #31
Ive been using a grapple and have managed to find the size of the biggest log and stump I can move with it. The wife did not enjoy the laundry the day I figured out how big was too big on a root ball root ball. So now Im having the tires filled and thinking about some dead weight for the rear.
Its really nice to saw at just below waist level vice on the ground or arguing with the logs and a timber jack.

Mike,

Great solution! Could you use pallets for the sides as well - following the example you have posted?

I have more pallet material than 2x4 and scrap lumber.

Mike,

Great solution! Could you use pallets for the sides as well - following the example you have posted?

I have more pallet material than 2x4 and scrap lumber.

I have used pallets for sides but when empty they're hard to take apart and stack. I've even made them half height so I can put a half on top of a full height one.

I let my oak sit for 3 full summers before burning.
I think I have 25 of the full pallet racks and 10 of the half racks made

I now have much more wood than the pallet racks can hold so I use some like bookends and then fill in between with loose wood that I empty off the last 2 pallet racks.I use the last tow to fill in all racks unloading and stacking till I'm done then fill them and leave them alone.

I also used skids from the local hot tup store 7ft x 7 ft put ply and metal roofing on to use as a temp and moveable roof.
I only use it to cover the wood being burned this season
Since Sandy I've built up quite a supply about 30 cords
I use 5 per year and give away a few per year to people who need it.

Mike

I cut to length in the woods and haul out with the bucket or my 2 cu yd trailer (or both if I'm in a hurry.)

Considering the fun... the price to buy would equal, to me, about 32 years worth of wood!
