It depends on the manufacturer...
The CVT on the Yamaha Rhino has engine braking... much better than my hydrostatic garden tractor...
Yamaha is the only CVT that I know of with real engine braking. It has a wet clutch so the belt never slips. The belt stays tight at all times and never disengages. It will climb pretty much anything in high range. Mine has a couple of minor mods and will do 55 mph.
As far as belt life is concerned, I have over 2000 miles on the original and it is still within specs. A friend of mine has 3000. I will change it soon just to be on the safe side.
I have installed a chrome moly cage with a back seat and a cooler rack on the back.
I can't imagine being speed limited to 25 mph. Although on a small farm I can see the reason.
Good luck hunting for a UTV. Keep Yamaha in mind as they are great machines.
