Hello everyone I will be leaving for Long Island next Thursday
and the long ride that awaits us. My question is, what are some good out of the way places or things to visit on this trip
besides the obvious in the city. We will be taking I80 out there and I think we'll try and take I70 back. I'm not looking for anything fancy just something on the interesting and beautiful side. We've have talked about driving through the Amish country /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif, but I don't know of anything else. I'm sure there is othr things because of the history in that part of the country.

I80 runs thru PA. As someone who used to think "'Niagra Falls is just water running over a rock" I would also recommend a visit there. Saw it for the first time in person a couple of years ago...standing at the falls edge on the Canadian side it is hard to describe the sheer power, needless to say I was impressed...

If you do go to Gettysburg, hire one of the guides that go with you in your car and tell you all about the battle. It was so fascinating even my teenage boys remained interested. Best $50 I've ever spent. It was a couple years ago, but we found the guide at the National Park Service Building.

Another favorite family spot is Mammoth Caves in Kentucky. I've been there five times, and still find it amazing. Look into buying tickets on-line, since the best tours sell out fast.

Just a suggestion if your not on a time schedule. Instead of taking I-70 back, try US 40 which parallels I-70. This will slow your travel down, but take you back about 50 years and show you America. Some parts of US 40 no longer exist, they have merged it into I-70, ie. the Il. and In. border section. They have also eliminated the East St Louis section in Il. There is some really pretty, rolling country on this highway and it has just been redone (in Illinois) and is a real good, smooth road. I cannot vouch for the condition of the road in other states. It kind of reminds me of route 66. Amish country in Illinois is north of I-70 in the Arthur, Tuscola and Arcola area. There is a small settlement south of I-70 in Crawford county. Enjoy, be safe!

And don't forget the Gateway Arch in St. Louis!

Don't know if it's your thing or not, but you can take I44 out of St. Louis down through S.W. Mo. Then hook back up with I70 out in nowhere Kansas(my 10 yr olds words two years ago going to Colorado) There are two trout fishing parks on your way. Meremac Springs south of Rolla and Benett Springs north of Springfeild. And then there is always the original Bass Pro Shops in Springfeild. All though the way Johnnie Morris is building them if there isn't one in Colorado yet there soon will be. A new one going up in Hampton VA and Bossier City LA so far this year

I would like to say thanks to everyone for responding. I wopuld really like to visit Gettysburg Va I enjoy the old Civilwar parks. I have been to Vicksburg and Shilo already. I will have to see where Mammoth Caves are in relation to the Interstates that would be interesting as well. Again thanks to all. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you want to see Mammoth Cave, don't forget what Chris said about getting tickets in advance. We drove out there one day and thought we'd take a tour. At the ticket window they told us they were already booked up for the day and if we wanted to make reservations for the next day, to call on the phone. I asked, "Can't we just make reservations here and now?" and was told that you have to call on the phone, can't make reservations in person. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I think they have more business than they want, so I decided to help them out and go elsewhere. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If you take I-70, and you have the slightest interest in airplanes, stop at the Air Force Museum in Fairborn Ohio, just east of Dayton. The museum is on the grounds of Wright Patterson Air Force Base and very easy to get to from I-70 with plenty of signs. They have more planes and exhibits than you can shake a stick at. And the best part is..............it's FREE!!!

Honk if you love peace and quiet.
