I vote for a foot valve also!
Now here is an idea---
Plumbing supply houses will have a 4" ABS back flow valve, also known as a sewage back water valve.
That is in the reasonable price range and you then would add a 4" ABS (male or female) pipe thread adaptor.
The unit is all ABS with a flapper valve that will retain your prime, so you will prime only once.
I would fashion a 'cage' of some sort to keep out trash otherwise the smallest twig could hold the flap open.
Probable price $60.00 or so.
Call it 'The poor man's foot Valve"
I bet a proper brass foot valve would run over $300., heck a 1.5" is $50,!
