Cowboy MD,

I’m with you brother.

I have nothing to hide… But my privacy and freedom.

What I’m “axing” here is do I cave or throw them the keys to the joint.

The letter I received also implicated that they want to take a look around in my outbuildings to see of I have anything worth there time that they can bill me for.

AGAIN!, it’s NOT the money. It’s freedom.

The last home I owned I got a letter from the town saying that they were interested in what citizens had in there garages that might be taxable, but they didn’t know about.
Well I had a 1959 Lotus Super Seven that I was restoring for my own use and I’m thinking so they want money for this too?

Hey, life is complicated. I have to take care of the wife, the kids, the grandkids etc.
Land of the free? What does a guy have to do stop the intrusion to one’s life.

I know there are plenty of guys out there that just say “let em in”. “Who cares”. “You’re trying to save a buck”, “what are you hiding?”

It’s only about freedom.
Comments?

Best Regards to All TBN’ers for the Holiday Season!
Pilgrim.

Run for office or support a candidate that supports your views. Get the word out as to what is wrong and right with the current system. Attend local government meetings. Write letters to the newspaper. You get the idea /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

I don't like lots of things the local public school board does. While my kids don't attend public school, my tax money sure does. After my kids grow up, I plan on possibly running for school board. I also write letters to the local paper and attend public meetings that affect my life.

As for your current situation, you don't like it... neither do I. But whatcha gonna do? Don't let 'em in and you'll make your family suffer in the long run and give yourself lots of un-needed stress. Accept the fact that it is unavoidable right now, let them in, pay the taxes, then work to change the laws. Don't end up being the town nut that wouldn't pay his taxes. Work towards being a community asset that understands how his community works and makes a difference in peoples' lives. (hey, who's playing that pfife and drum music?)

Best of luck to you /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

This entier he!! bent for leather concept of continual reassessment of property is based on the requirement that the total value of government bonds in any political subdivision may not excede the total assessed value of property in that geographic area. During the 1980s a lot of states issued bonds beyond their total assessed value, so they had to reassess rapidly to cover their political future or face indictment. Guess witch path they took.
When the pols determined people would accept this type of action, they instituted statutes enabling automatic reassessment every so many years. In NY, it's 6 years. At least I know I'll be spending several hours dealing with this crap in 2008. In my first meeting this year the assessor admitted they had no comparable propertys to base my assessment on, so they just took a guess. Gee, I wish I could do that in my business.

I wouldn't let them in. If they want to push it empty your house into a storage place and just keep the bare essentials. Stove, bed and running water. Then when they ask how you can live like that, tell them the taxes are too high and you can't afford the luxurys like the neighbors. When they are done move everything back in and run for office as soon as you can. Have fun but I would not want them running thru my house as I have nothing to hide but want my privacy.

had to deal with this years ago, this is in NY but from what i can remember they can measure your house from the outside, but were not allowed to DEMAND entry. i would recomend u check your state laws.

Guys,

I got a say that I find this shocking. A: That anyone thought they could get away with this.
B: That people let them.

Around here its strictly square feet.
Not sure if they measure outside dimensions, or fly over. Likely they guess from the road side.

When I first bought my property it had no structures on it. Property tax was almost zero. The county then radically increased (~100%) the tax on one parcel and indcated that a building existed. It did not. I called several times and finally went down in person and demanded that they fix it. They did.

Frankly any tax accecsor climbing fences/gates planning on walking through with a clip board in this part of the world will be lucky to avoid the average set of dogs and make it to the average front door.

In my opinion you should make it as hard as possible for them. Don't cooperate and if they give you an outragues tax bill fight them like he..
This tax assesor reports to who? Does this person want to keep their elected / appointed job? How do your neighbors feel about this?

You have a copy of an apprisal? Seems to me thats all that is needed to fight any incorrect bills. I am sure you had to have one for the mortgage.

It seems to me that if everyone made this hard and promised to remove the elected official responsible for this travesty the problem would go away.
