thingy: that toy truck of your's probably has hydraulic lifters, no need to adjust those. I believe that if you ever had an old solid lifter car you would know all about adjusting valve lash ;) I believe that these are solid lifters on these tractors too...

Spike, hydrolic ,,,yeah heard that from somebody else,,its beyond me,,,got two lawn mowers,[both 25 h.p.],,ones got about 600 hours and ones got about 250,,,guess they got hydrolic valves on them too? Got a troybuilt 8 h.p tiller thats 11 years old,,same I guess,,guess they got valves on them?,,not even close to being a mecanic.
But still believe in the old saying,if it ain't broke,,don't hurry up and see if you can fix it. thingy

Frankly, I think the 50 hour head retorque may be a carry over from the 2 cylinder models. the 2 cylinder engines seemed more prone to blowing head gaskets. could also be the head gasket material now is more modern, although I occasionally see a copper covered asbestos head gasket in my spare parts shipments, most are of modern compressed paper design.

Its nice to have customers satisfied over a long term. Part of that comes from having informed, sometimes patient customers!

We are entering our 4th year now of importing and selling chinese made tractors and it looks like 2007 could be a big year for us. It knowing that our past customers are satisfied with thier purchase. My goal has always been to try to deliver more than customers expect. that means not overselling the characteristics of my product, although I am having a hard time not puffing up our new line for 2007. More details on that to follow

Merry Christmas to everyone here on TBN!

Well merry christmas to you to blue.
Frank, info on how to and what to,[if not on here],is on the nyctoa, and joes site, and maybe the ctoa,,might even be on johns site by now,,with pictures,or they was,,,but like all info, take it all with a cautious eye and read alot before doing it,,the dealer who sold you the tractor might be the first to ask,,,you also got to touque those bolts in a pattern,,you may need a new valve cover gasket too,,but unless its sounding bad or something,,you should have plenty of time to study up on it,,thingy

I have a KAMA 454. I must say a heck of a tractor. If I had just waited a few months, it would have been the 554!

Thingy,

It did not feel required when doing it but.hey..I was playing with my tractor:)

Yeah,I was too really, did mine about 3 years ago or so,,I'm not a mecanic, and it was the first time I'd done anything like that,,it was easy and almost,[not quite],fun. My headbolts didn't move,[learned later that some say to loosen them first,so don't really know if I did that part right],,,lash, can't really remember, but they wasn't far off from what they told me,,seems like some were a little tight,,but that was on a cold motor,so,,I don't know,,know I didn't accomplish anything really,,just happy that I got it back together and it ran,,,maybe one thing it helped,,if I ever do it again, won't be quite the cheery,,,,thingy,,,,[got me on the motor size increase though, I'm dense]

I check valve lash and the head bolts before I put any hours on a tractor.
The lash will close some over time as the wear factor between the valve face and seat closes, usually on these tractors the wear is .001 to .0015 over 500 hours of use.Since these imploy solid lifters they need adjusted from time to time, hydraulic lifters would adjust for the wear, but the solid lifter gives better performance since it has a positive lift and no hydraulic sag or lift time delay.
For the one who worries about such things, adjust every 250 hours, otherwise I do it every 500 hours after the first time.
Some people get confused and hear the clicking from under the hood and right away think its valves or they tighten valves to tight because they hear the clicking, remember this, the injectors are mechanical injectors and they also make a clicking noise, easy to confuse with valve lash clicking.

yes about the hydraulic lifters: (think of them as a small shock absorber) which OIL from the oil pump fills up pushing on the lifter plunger (which is the top face of the lifter) which moves UP against the push rod keeping the push rod in direct contact with the lifter and the valve rocker which pushes the rocker into the valve stem maintaining sure contact against all the parts. sometimes you will hear people talking about a FLAT lifter, (which is when the oil does not keep the lifter plunger in contact with the rod.) then you end up with a lot of valve clicking which may or may not go away with a oil cleaning. usually debris will clog the oil hole in the lifter bore which prevent adequate oil from filling the lifter and pushing the lifter plunger up.. the oil from the lifter plunger actually passes up through the lifter & rod into the rocker tip/assy and sprays oil onto the rocker assy and lubricates it and the upper valves & valve stem seals.

this same oil will sometimes leak past the valve stem seals and into the combustion chamber. this is when you get a bunch of blue smoke at engine start up but little after that.

I'm not sure how the briggs do it??? but those little suckers sure run well huh!? :D also 2 cycles don't work the same way at all, nor does the rotary engines now those suckers will make ya scratch you're head ;) kind of a mechanical JET engine lol...

(also I'm more of an electrician than I am a mechanic so I'm not 100% sure that what I stated above uses the right mechanical terms...)

ok anyhow this ends todays BS tech tips. :D
