He would have liked a 240gr .44(.429 actually, but...) over 22 or so grains of 2400, and one of those late 60's early 70's Ruger .44 carbines.

Or, a "Scout" rifle, with EER scope, in a bolt action, like a .308 or similar cartridge.

A nice round too is the .30-06 Ackley improved. You can use standard ammo, or load up a bit with fire formed cases. This assumes that one reloads...

The 30-30 is a grand old cartridge, but is not very powerful. The 7.62x39 is a nice cartidge, and has a number of match wildcats based on it. Not too powerful though.

In your list, which you mention would be rather long, the 7mm-08 is a nice flat shooter with mild recoil.

The other, is the 250-3000 Savage. A classic cartridge! There are sooooo many!

I like big cartidges, but still find my .300 Savage in the lever action to have a reasonable recoil with a nice handling rifle. For longer range, a Remington 700V in .308 works nice on antelope.

You are right, between the old and new, there are soooo many choices!

....and sooooo little time to try them all! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Speaking of the 7.62x39 derivatives, I shoot the 6 PPC. Kindof funny how the new WSSM's look a lot like the PPC's, isn't it?

Chim:

Yes something of that caliber. I beleive Elmer considered a 30-06 as a plinking cartridge.

Okay you guys, all of you are just messing around and just going to piss off the hogs. Get one of those .50 BMG and be done with it. My son has a Armilite AR50 and it would clean and gut the hogs at 500 yards (I almost said 1000 yards but a minute of angle group may just miss at that range). The recoil isn't much greater than a 12 ga. and the muzzle blast will kill any bugs anywhere near you. The only drawback is the weight of these guns.

Try a New England Firearms Handi Rifle. Its short, compact and is inexpensive so you can beat it up with out feeling guilty. I have one in 223 that is very accurate.

I didn't notice hogs in the original list. The NEF is available in 243, but I can't reccomend that cartridge in that rifle because there seem to be a lot of extraction issues right now with that combination (my rifle included). Good caliber though. Varmints, Distance, Big game. Pick two. Someone mentioned the scout scope on a lever gun - I recently got a 336 and put a Leupold Scout scope I had laying around on an unfinished gun on it. WOW it's fast, nice bright clear picture you don't have to hunt for. I balked at the price of the ghost ring until I put it on Nice. Easy to spot, I shoot aperture sights on almost all my other rifles already, and have never done well with leaf sights. Good splurge, this one was worth it.

"Yes, you can put down a hog in a trap with a .22 shot behind the ear"

I was at my Dad's farm watching the neighbor farmer scold some hogs. One was left in the truck.. the farmer put the butt of the 22 long rifle on the hogs head & fired.. the hog was still standing 20 minutes later.. so the farmer slit his throat.. hog still didn't go down.. that was one tuff hog. I did see my buddy shoot a hog in the head w/ a 44 magnum.. he went down right away no problem.. bigger is better!

I have the same problem with cayotes and hogs at the farm and I think Ranchman summed it up pretty well. I use a scoped .243 BAR on cayotes and it works very well. I would think that the Mini-14 would work equally as well. You can take hogs with a small caliber but you have to shoot VERY, VERY well and have the patience to wait for just the right angle. In general, going after hogs with anything that small is just going to [censored] them off. I also carry a Winchester 30-30 in my truck and have taken hogs with it but it too is far from ideal. I have hit a big, 400 pound hog twice with a 30-30 at under a 100 yards and watched as it tore up the fence as it left. For me, the minimum caliber for shooting hogs would be .308/30-06. (I like the Browning lever action. I only added that in case Santa reads this). The poster who mentioned the .375 H&H is not exagerating ... the bigger the better but probably the ideal, all round caliber would be something in the .338 range. Now, how do I mount one of those .50 BMG rifles in the bed of my truck?
