Just cause I like to argue; those of us that normally change oil, I'm sure none of us have accidentally left the old filter o-ring on, and dumped almost all the oil on the road within minutes; we also never grabbed the wrong oil or filter; and all. I know I certainly haven't had to go tow wife's car home with "flat rope" cause I left the old filter o-ring on, cause that would have been embarrassing... I defefinetly wouldn't have forgotten to tighten a power steering hose on son's truck. And I most certainly haven't ran over the oil catch pan, multiple times over the years

I did that once. I remember spinning the new filter on didn't feel right, more than the usual 3/4 turn of o-ring "squish". I had never seen an o-ring not come off with the old can filter, so I didn't even think to check that.

Anyway, got the thing filled back up, no immediate leaks, so I parked it in back in the garage and moved onto the next vehicle. It never leaked that bad, running or parked, but it did drip a little.

That car having always been dry before, I pulled the filter off a few days later to look for the trouble, and found the second o-ring. Later inspection of the old filter confirmed its source, and I've noticed that particular car has that problem almost every time I spin off the old filter, it must be the way they make that particular filter.

Anybody that's made that mistake including me will never make it again. I always verify the old oring is on the filter and even double check the oil filter mount before new one is installed. I have always been grateful the double gasket failed in my driveway on my car, not a customer's. 40 years ago and it's something you never forget. Always put a rag with oil fill cap over hood latch so I can't shut hood without filling oil and replacing cap. Learned that from an old timer mechanic.

You're right, and I agree with you... as an adult.

Now, as a teenager, I'd probably be inclined to not disobey the guy who's both my boss and my girlfriend's father. I believe 5030 stated his case as such.
I was the same person at 16 as I am today. As I said, my parents raised me better, not perfect but not a cheat. I think 5030 is a POS, his posts are proof.

Once I did that 30 yrs ago. At my soon to be in laws house. Now I always check for old o ring gasket before installing new oil filter.

I've done plenty of other dumb things but none of those.

I have seen some dumb mistakes in my day but here's a
dandy: I went with a friend to his buddy's house and he
pulled the engine out and engine still on lift was under it
taking the bolts out of the oil pan pried the pan loose but
he didn't drain the oil, what a mess he was covered in oil

yikes. Never good to get under an engine on a lift, for any reason. Maybe he deserved the shower, just for that.

I've never done any of those things. Not because I'm smart either, I just kind of obsess during an oil change. Was kind of pounded into me I guess. I have a son who has left the oil cap off and ran a car empty of oil. Ruined the engine. Same son also over filled an engine and ruined the engine.

Needless to say, he obsesses during oil changes now too! But he learned the hard way. Both vehicles were ruined.
