Joe, I don't know what kind of neighborhood you live in, and "in town", yes, most folks have fenced yards, only take their animals outdoors inside the fenced yard or on a leash, etc. But out in the country? Only a very few people that I've known have their dogs "confined" in any way. Just a different way of life, I guess, but most farmers I've known have dogs running loose all the time.

County population is 30,000.

Road I live on is named after a family that has been here "forever" and everyone around us on our rural road are related somehow.

Indeed, going to work at five a.m riding my rural road, there are "loose" dogs "wondering around" even at that time in the morning.

Four dogs that I can think of will lie next to the road, then when you drive by them, they will chase your car.

My wife has had to "swerve" numerous times because shes scared that she will hit one.

My question is, where are these dogs owners?

My point is that if you live next to a "traveled" road and you have a pet, you need to be aware where your pet is (to make sure the pet is not near the traveled road).

I happen to think this is the pets owner responsibility (as far as knowing where your pet is).

Chances may be your pet may be "smart enough" to stay away from the road, and pehaps you as the pets owner realize this (as far as staying away from the road).

However, if your pet does "wonder" onto the road without your supervision, and is struck by a "commonly traveled" road, anyway you cut it, it's your fault.

Do you agree?

We happen to have six dogs now. Three will never go futher than we want them to go when they are out with us. The other three have "training collars" so that if they "get a scent" or "take off" we can make sure that they come back. The only time they are outside is when we are with them, and we built a "fenced run" (very large) so if we want to leave them outside unsupervised, they will stay in that "area".

Some dogs are very well "trained" to the point that they will not leave your property, but still, you do run the risk they will get off your property. When they get off your property, anything that happens to them (or anything thay they may do) ultimately (sp?) is your responsibility.

Do you agree with that as well?

I might add in a perfect world, everyone drives within the speed limit, will go out of thier way to help others, and will respect others property. Sadly enough, I'm unlucky enough not to live in that world.

Sigarms, I agree 100%. Our dogs get the same supervision as our kids. If we're outside, the dogs are outside, if we're gone for the day, they are in the house safe and sound, (sound asleep...). JT

Nothing wrong with venting about this. Our 12-year old cocker spaniel was run over by the power company meter reader. The dog was nearly deaf, he saw her (he said) and didn't bother making sure he didn't run over her, he just kept driving right over figuring she should have enough sense to know he was coming. Sorry outfit.

To further make me mad he was driving on a gravel drive a nieghbor made in front of my house without my permission to get to the back side of his property. There was a trailer that one of his kids lived in, so he made this gate on the backside so they wouldn't drive in front of HIS house to get there, but rather mine. We had several confrontations over how the drive blocked water flow and made a big puddle in front of my house every time it rained. The drive made a curve and didn't even have a culvert so it was like a dam.

One day I got a 5-gallon bucket and started dipping bucket loads of water, carrying onto their property and forcefully dumping the contains at their front door. The guy finally came out and I just kept dipping and dumping without saying anything. My wife hollared at me and said my daughter wanted me on the phone. She was lying but got me in before I did something stupid.

I never got along with the neighbor and finally moved out to my land in 2000.

So sorry about you family dog.

I'd set up some serious speed bumps immediately and remind them with signs that they are crossing private property. I can't stand the idiots that drive fast on small country roads. -I had a neighbor that did the same, as well as her friends as they crossed our proptery. One day when they were tearing past my house I went out into the road with an ax in my hand. They stopped in their tracks and were clearly freightened. I had red in my eyes after asking them to slow down three times earlier in the year. Just to be clear, I was chopping wood and I just happen to have the ax in my hand. However it was quite effective. They sure did slow down after that deal. Needless to say it didn't go over too well with the other neighbors, but they finally took it seriously. We have kids and dogs and I wasn't going to take it anymore. Many of these kinds of people only understand this kind of "communication".
