Veterans Day fast approaching

I am a veteran of 20 years including of the vietnam era. I never expected anything from the public except what was garanteed in an enlistment contract. Most of us, who consider ourselves to be professional military actually feel the same way.
I was never a hero, just a person doing a job they were paid to do!!!
An admin discharge is a way to release an individual from their enlsitment contract without going through some fancy legal proceedings.
Could be as simple as the person failed to meet height and weight standards or was a homosexual, or was considered a security risk or other issue.
Is/was used to release females who got pregnant on a ship.
This discharge allows the person released to have full VA benefits after discharge.

Not all of use took our "senior class trip" to the jungles. I got put on a 2 mile X 4 mile island, 1,400 miles from Anchorage, Alaska.

Van W. Cottom Shemya Island, Alaska February 1975 76

An Airman stood at the Pearly Gate;
His face was wan and old.
He gently asked the man of fate
Admission to the Fold.

What have you done, St. Peter asked,
To gain admission here?
I've been in the Aleutians
For nigh unto a year.

Then the gates swung open sharply
As St. Peter tolled the bell.
Come in, Come in, said he, and take a harp.
You've had your share of hail.

I graduated high school in 1970, got a contract enlistment with the Army to become a FAC flying small spotter air craft. I already had a pilots license, so the Army rushing things along. I just wanted to fly. However, God had his hand on me, I was suddenly found defective in eyesight, and was released from the contract and sent home. On the advise of a senior veteran I joined the Air Force and was made a Satellite Communications Technician/Operator.

Knowing what returning Vets were going through I made it a point to wear my uniform while at home, but was never harassed. Of course, at 6'1 and 225 at 22 years old, you really didn't want to trouble me to much.

First off, I would like to say thank you for your service. You , like all our other men and women serve to protect the rights of we the free and we should be more thankful everyday not just today.
That being said, the so-called "Rich"1% pay around 17 % of our total revenue collected to fuel this economy. Nearly 1/5th of every dollar collected. They do this by hard work, hiring us remaining 99 percent to slave for them in exchange to feed, clothe, and shelter our families.
The Protesters would have the hard working class ,such as most vets,to slave away but unlike the America we enjoy now, they would take the profits from the working and give to the nonworkers.
SORRY, knowone deserves a living wage just for being born. This is just one of thier stupid ideas. Please do the research and think for yourself. America has been the Greatest country because or the oppertunities to work hard and be rewarded for your efforts. We have these oppertunities and freedoms because Vets like you, no matter how differing in opinions, stand together to keep our children safe at night.
Freedom isn't Free. If you are sitting at home, with a wife ,kids, stop and listen. Do you hear Bombs dropping? Gunfire around the house? Do your kids all sleep in the middle of the house at night in case of a gunbattle? NO? Thank a vet!!!

Two summers ago I attended a seminar with my pastor where representatives of various groups presented many wonderful support programs for military families with loved ones overseas. The keynote speaker was a National Guard Brigadier General who had just taken command of the Guard in New Hampshire. During the discussion he iniitiated after his prepared message he asked if any in the audience had been in the miliitary and where did it take you. I was the only hand up, and when I told him Viet Nam, he came over to me, shook my hand, and said thanks for my service. I have to say it rocked me to the core, and I still well up at the thought.

On this Veterans Day, I sincerely want to thank all veterans for their service to the United Sates of America.

When you go to town and see a member or small group in uniform standing at the check-out or coming toward you in the isle take a moment to go to them, extend your hand, and thank them for their service to our country.
It always puts a sparkle in their eyes and helps them understand that we who have served in the past, as well as those that haven't, understand the sacrifices they are making for our freedom.
