That is a drawbar that goes between the lift arms, correct? Isn't that the wrong drawbar to be pulling stumps with? I was taught to pull with the drawbar that sticks out from underneath the tractor, located under the PTO, not one that connects between the 3PT lift arms. What's the consensus on this, folks? Just asking, not stirring up the pot... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Right you are Mossroad, Pulling with the real drawbar keeps the front end on the ground and mostly prevents dangerous backflips. Using a 3 point drawbar attachemnt transfers a lot of the weight up to the top rear of the rearend and can cause a very fast fatal backflip.

Yeah, I remember that thread. Good film too, but I was not laughing, more like a shiver, cause that could have been me.

I would like to see a series of those tests with different tractors and different equipment on the same tractors. Could provide some safe buying tips for tractors. I know some models are more prone to overturn than others...but which ones ??

Actually one of the reason's I used the 3pt drawbar is because I could lower it all the way down and be well below the rear axle. The tractor's drawbar is about level with the axle and looked more dangerous to me. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I filled up the loader bucket for the "good" pull that finally broke the drawbar but always "tested" the situation for raising the front wheels before giving it hell. With the 3pt elevated I could see how the tractor could flip a few times, but with it lowered I didn't have any trouble. I was more concerned about breaking/bending the 3pt lift arms.

I just looked over the link that Herdfan provided. I guess I see it now, the 3pt arms are mounted to the frame above the rear axle so there is always a chance of flipping. I guess I got pretty lucky. I was more nervous about the chain breaking, that's why I finally went with the truck. I figured it would be easier to fix a tailgate than the back of my head!

A chain hooked to the real drawbar will be more likely to jump back under the tractor if it breaks than one hooked to the lift arms. The one hooked to the lift arms jumps up more.
